Mangaluru, Dec 17: Assistant director in the department of tourism, Mangaluru, U Jitendranath, was sentenced to seven years of imprisonment by the judge of the third additional district and sessions court here, BB Jakati, through a judgement delivered on Thursday December 16. A fine of Rs 30,000 has also been imposed on him.

Anushka, a contract-based computer operator, who was named as second accused, was sentenced to three years jail term. She has also been asked to pay a fine of Rs 10,000.

Jitendranath reportedly had demanded for a bribe of Rs 15,000 for sanctioning subsidy available to minority candidates who operate tourist taxis. The Lokayukta police, during a raid conducted on September 10, 2014, had caught the accused red-handed.

Special public prosecutor, Raveendra Munnippady, had argued the case on behalf of the prosecution.

This is totally unacceptable. Why single out only a couple of govt. employees and punish them? This is not fair as almost everybody in all the government offices are corrupt. If you take action on all the bribery cases almost everybody will be in jail.

Rational Thinker, Please explain what part is not fair? Is it unfair that these two have to go to jail for demanding and accepting a bribe ? Would you consider this as a preventive measure wherein the court made an example out of these two so that government officials would think before trying to take a bribe ? What do you think would be fair in this situation? Should these two be let go free? Please give a Rational answer

Why is Lokayukta not raiding politicians? These govt employees have to pass on their share to politicians to survive. One of my relatives (retired now) who was a govt employee had to pay bribe to a minister for his transfer. Lokayukta will not dare to touch the politicians. I pity these two govt employees.

You go to any Govt. Office, without paying bibe you can't get your things done. Now we can see so many cases coming to light. Are these culprits are punished??? OR it's only an eye wash to fool the public. If it's real seize the money and punish all the officials/staff involved. At the same time , inform the public whom to alert!!

For demanding 15k bribe 2 people got a jail term of 10 years in total. If same yardstick is applied on our MPs MLAs their life time will not be enought to serve the sentance

What about the big fish .The Lokayukta police will not go a mile near them .Forget about catching them. Imagine the crores swallowed in the name of Smart city project. Even a simple bus stand has been billed for >10 lakh rupees. I can build a good 2BHK envorinmental friendly house with that amount. In kerala they routinely build houses with that budget. The contractors and politicians/electeds reps are often seen together.I wonder what have they to discuss?. Mangalore has the highest level of corruption in India and that is for sure.

It is difficult to fight against corruption. Government has spent lot of money for CCTV in Government offices. But those cameras are turned to opposite direction of staff. At that time Lokayukta was very strong. Hence, we found some cases have been proved in courts.
