Mangaluru to get attractive, ‘Garden City’ look with 80 parks

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Dec 18: Compared to cities like Mysuru and Bengaluru, the city has only a few parks. The greenery level in several wards here is at a level that is less than what is desirable. Therefore a plan has been drawn up to make the city attractive with 80 parks dotting its wards. The plan will be executed by Mangaluru Urban Development Authority (MUDA), which has begun the task of spot inspection. Of these, 43 parks will be located within Mangaluru south assembly constituency and 37 in Mangaluru north constituency.

In the first phase, 15 parks will be built around the city. This work is planned to be completed in three months. The parks will be developed in five phases. In the first phase, six parks will come up in the city north constituency and nine in the south constituency. This was stated by chairman of MUDA, Ravishankar Mijar. He said that the support of the MP and legislators will be drawn to successfully implement the plan.

If the spots identified are too small, Miyawaki style park resembling a mini forest will be built. If the area is medium in size, walking track, children’s point etc will be installed. If it is a landscape model, an attractive park will be designed, said MUDA engineer Aarati.

A team of city corporation officials is already on the job of identifying the spots for the parks which are planned to be built in Padil, Maroli, Yekkur etc. There is a plan to entrust the future maintenance of these parks to companies, institutions, banks etc, it is learnt.

Among the city dwellers, the children and the senior citizens in particular are living under pressure and many elders are showing symptoms of depression particularly after the spread of the pandemic. They need good parks to refresh their bodies and minds in the morning and evening. MUDA therefore plans to provide at least one park to each of the wards.

Ravishankar Mijar said that the 80 parks planned now will be on the lines of the three models referred above and they will beautify the city further. He said that as per the current plans, the parks will be built within a year by using the grant of MUDA.

80 parks...!!!. Actual parks or only boards for display? First decide the names to these parks, instead of fighting later. Once the names are approved then think of location. Then think of installation of some statues. Last plan for design.

Kadri park is very huge and old park. Everywhere grass and dry leaves can be seen. Now they started children's train and installed exercise equipment it is good initiative. But no maintenance. What is the use of building unnecessary 80 parks. Is it necessary.

India itself is a complicated country. Any public facilities are made for the masses and masses are poor. Construction of roads, parks etc are done by local contractors who don’t have exposure. Ultimately whatever done falls short of a standard that cant attract well to do people. Hence we have created a class. Well to do prefer going to trendy restaurants, walking inside their compounds, using resorts and travel by air avoiding public transport generally. There is hardly a park besides Kadri park and some construction is going on which seems again heading in the wrong direction. A great opportunity is wasted. Instead of broadening the road it is pulled further inside which will create chaos once completed.

Congratulating the MUDA for having initiated, a foward looking idea, I have suggestion which would make the living in Mangalore more bearable during summer months. MUDA can right away start planting trees which also yield fruits like mango and other edible fruits suited for Mangalore climate, such tree survive for more than 50 to 60 years on road side. These trees not only help to reduce the temperature during summer , but may help in balancing the climate, which has become unpredictable these days. Further afforestation drive should be started from Mangalore to Ghat sections near Charmadi and Shiradi, ehere msny trees have been cut down for widening the roads

Existing parks and gardens in Mangalore are becoming like Chambal Ghats without proper care and maintenance as criminals hiding place and with all sorts of illegal activities. Imagine if 80 more of this come up. BJP is creating thieves dens to make Mangalore ‘Mafia City’. BJP FYI, one who takes care of the child to bring up is greater than one who has born that child. Same way it is important to take care of the project regularly than only to start and forget about it.
