Udupi: Minimum marriage age - Swarnavalli Swamiji consents if law is uniform

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Dec 22: Sri Gangaldharendra Theertha Saraswati Swamiji of Sonda Swarnavalli Math has raised his voice against discriminating between people belonging to different religions by saying that he is agreeable to the increase in the minimum age of girls for marriage proposed by the government only if the same is made uniformly applicable to people from all the religions. Giving his opinion here about the proposed amendment, the Swamiji wondered why Hindus are being singled out for harsh treatment.

Speaking to media persons here on Tuesday 21, the Swamiji objected to the proposal of the government to increase the minimum age for marriage of girls to 21. He said he has strong reservations if this rule is made applicable only for Hindus.

The Swamiji pointed out that marriages of Muslims and Christians are ruled by different laws. "In the case of Muslims, a girl who is 15 years of age can marry. But here I understand that the marriageable age of Hindu girls alone is being increased. By doing so, the government plans to impose their restrictions only on Hindus," he noted and asserted that he will support the bill only if the revised norm will be made applicable to all the religions.

The Swamiji noted that the governments at the state and the national level are currently sympathetic towards the Hindus. He however lamented the fact that no proper laws have been framed for the maintenance of Hindu temples. He said that the devotees of the temples should be allowed to manage the temples and the government should make religious centres autonomous. "Muslim religious centres are managed by the Wakf Boards. We demand for a similar entity to be established to manage Hindu temples. Karnataka government has to take a historic decision on this issue and this decision should provide a lead for the other states to follow suit," he opined.

Dear Swami, what is this new Raaga?First understand properly and start your veda or Manthra.A law means it abides to all in country. That you should know.Noone said it is only for some religion and others not.Problem is in India noone comply to the rules.Dint you hear till now even though age of marraige was 18till now ,girls were married off at the age of 14in villages in North or even in karnataka.?Does any Priest asks in temple girls age?For him important his work to finish .and cash.In Catholics it was fixed to 18 years. But many girls never marry before age of 25 years ,because they want to educate themselves and earn their own money before marraige. In Muslims I cant say,Many get 3 or four times before the adult age.Thats not my problem.Get children early,.Thatswhy it is better even they marry late.In India less educated girls because they get marry early. You should concentrate mostly in Hindus about dowry system ,not age .So start now to raise voice against your brothers not to receive dowry and not age.

IMHO, any religious persona has absolutely no jurisdiction to give his personal conditions on the marriage subject! Let him go and see that in most parts of Uttara Kannada majority girls are married off much before 18 years of age without the knowledge of the authorities! Also, what is his opinion on the devadasi system still being carried out openly in Saundatti?

ca girishkk dxb, you say many hindu girls remain unmarried because of age raised? No many hindu girls remain unmarried because of burden of paying so much money to groom. It is very expensinve mostly i Hindus we see .How much money Gold and other articles car etc, will a groom ?do you forget.?Even after marraige some grooms send girls home to bring more gold ,money ,Didnt hear till now.Dont turn things because now a law is come. How many girls in North ,villages girls are married off at the age of 14,even in karnataka?who sees age in Hindus ?Many are not educated because no sufficient money is there. In Catholics ,church has fixed 18 years but many sutdy and work and dont marry before or till 25-30years even parents insists them.Dowry ,in catholics thank God is not there. One who has gives .but parents dont send the girl without some gift.Whereas in Hindus without dowry or dowry is not sufficient turn off and go.So dont turn things to your side.I dont think in future parents will stick to the age of 21 in hindus.

As I see there are different laws which needs to be a single law for all. Even though if you see in Christianity, they dont have child marriage or below 18. So blaming Christians become routine job for all now which needs to stopped. Check in north India at what age they marry. I think in north karnataka there is still Devdasi going on(?)
