Karnataka invites Elon Musk to set up Tesla plant in Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Jan 19 (IANS): Karnataka has invited business magnate, CEO of Tesla to set up its plant in Bengaluru considered as the Silicon Valley of India.

Murugesh Nirani, Minister for Large and Medium Industries, took to twitter to invite electric major Tesla to start operations from the state.

"With over 400 Research and Development centers, 45 plus Electrical Vehicle (EV) startups and an EV cluster near Bengaluru, Karnataka has emerged as the EV hub of India. Mr Elon Musk, Karnataka would be an ideal destination to set up a Tesla plant. Bengaluru is already Tesla's maiden address in India," Nirani stated.

The state government has claimed that the state is already a hub to electric vehicles and an ideal place to establish its plant here. The state governments of Telangana, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Punjab and Tamil Nadu have already invited Tesla to open its base in their respective states.

Elon Musk has recently tweeted that he faced challenges from the government for releasing its products in India. "Tesla isn't in India yet due to "Challenges with the government", he wrote.

Tesla has registered its office in Bengaluru as Tesla India Motors and Energy Private Limited and named three directors. The firm is registered with an authorised capital of Rs 15 lakh and paid-up capital of Rs 1 lakh.

It may be recalled, welcoming the announcement, the then Chief Minister of the state B.S. Yediyurappa had tweeted: "Karnataka will lead India's journey towards green mobility. Electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla will soon start its operation in India with an R and D unit in Bengaluru. I welcome Elon Musk to India and Karnataka." However, he later deleted the tweet.

Mr. Musk, please don’t set up anything in Karnataka since it’s an extremely communal and primitive state. So better not invest and regret.

Unsure of the sales volumes, Musk wants to test the waters through the CBU route and wants tax waiver too. The states cannot do anything about it as the Central government has the final say on this issue. What will our Minister for Large and Medium Industries do to get around this problem. He - and all other states that have joined the bandwagon - clearly seems to have is brain below his knees.

I hope tax issues will be sorted by Central government but generating employment to Thousands of qualified people and technical staff as well a administrative staff is worth considering the approach of Telsa in India. Now the the awareness and urgency is growing to reduce fossil fueled vehicles to avoid green house effect and encourage renewable energy based or vehicles, surely our Central government come out with right solution mutually benefitted to both the parties. We cannot look only into make profit. Also, need to divert or pay attention to other benefits too.

All these state politicians are fools. Elon Musk is is having problems in entering India because of some tax issues. Indian government has put some tax structures in place keeping Indian interests on priority. None of the states can bypass these tax rules of the country and invite Musk .

. India has 60% tax when you import a car priced below $40,000 and 100% for those priced above $40,000 - TESLA WANTS TO TEST THE MARKET BY FULL IMPORTS AND GRADUALLY INDIGENIZE --- India has no special incentives for Electric -- EV 's imports -- So importing and selling will not have traction -- Sales volumes--vs Costs -- PLUS ----India unfortunately is a graveyard for US car manufacturers. Ford and General Motors have already exited India after investing heavily over the past couple of decades-- - EV -- volumes is @ present 1% of total vehicle sales - in INDIA -- So cannot expect immdt volumes-- --------------- Other issues -- Battery --Charging stations -- etc etc -- FOR TESLA it will be a long journey and whether ready to go thru' long process - of setting up a local full fledged mfr plant -- considering many challenges --surprises which have happened - for other large projects -- -- Political etc etc --

India's tax structure is very good for India. MG, Hyundai and TATA have already started manufacturing and selling in India. If Elon is smart, let him start manufacturing in India before he misses the bus. Let him not waste time in persuading Indian government to reduce import taxes!

Well, Ford were manufacturing in India and now the both plants in India have downed the shutters. MG, now a Chinese company,on the other hand is doing well in India despite the tall claims about 'Chinese ban', needless to say trade with China at 125 billion$ in 2021 was an all time high!

Ford was not adapting to Indian markets. Same old Endeavor, figo and ecosport... nothing else. It is ford's incompetency that it had to leave. Nothing to blame on India. MG is manufacturing in India. Let it be a chinese or german company. As long as it provides jobs in India, it is okay. The trade figures which you mentioned is about imports only.

“Elon Reeve Musk FRS is an entrepreneur and business magnate. He is the founder, CEO, and Chief Engineer at SpaceX; Tesla, controls two-thirds of the multibillion-dollar electric-vehicle market it pioneered and is valued at a cool $1 trillion.” Karnata State should be lucky to have initiated and invited Telsa to start their production lin EV in our State. Such production line will absorb thousands of qualified Electronic & computer qualified personnel who can enjoy Intl. level working conditions and emoluments. Karnataka will shine !

Many of the businesses / industrialists and their employees in Karnataka are troubled by all these rogue elements of Rakshana Vedike's, Rakshak Dals, etc, under some pretext or the other. No one wishes to go to a place where peaceful co-existence is disturbed. ... I have seen quite a number of units shifting out to either Tamil Nadu or Telangana states....This aspect needs to be seriously looked into if we wish to see progress and development

Elon musk said he is facing challenges from the government to setup plant in India ,but did not mention what were those challenges . He is not willing to produce the Tesla in India but planning to get them as CKD and wants the government to waive off his import duties . The govt should not agree for this demand . Also let me clarify for people who are crying saying that they want Telsa to come to India and they all want to buy telsa ,it is not cheap and expensive even if they manufacture it in India . Even their cheapest model would start atleast from 25 to 30 lakhs which majority of the people cannot buy .
