Don't participate in 'Surya Namaskar' on R-Day: Jamaat-e-Islami Hind to Muslim students

Bengaluru, Jan 25 (IANS): The Karnataka unit of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) has asked Muslim students and parents not to participate in "Surya Namaskar" on the occasion of the 75th Republic Day as the ritual is against Islam.

Dr. Muhammad Saad Belgami, JIH President told IANS on Tuesday that, "Surya Namaskaar" is against Islam. We don't prostrate before our prophet and we believe in oneness of the God. "Surya Namaskar" is not allowed for Muslim students," he said.

"We also strongly advice Muslim parents and children not to participate in this idolatrous practice. This should also be an occasion to make children understand the concept of oneness of God and its demands. We urge the management of schools and institutions to respect this diversity and freedom of choice," he explained.

The central government has issued instructions on the 75th Republic Day celebrations that special programmes to perform "Surya Namaskar" with musical instruments should be held across the country. The plan is to achieve a target of 75 crore "Surya Namaskar" across 30 states, 30,000 institutes by involving three lakh students. "We wish to say that "Surya Namaskar" is devotional Yoga practice involving prostration to the Sun and chanting of hymns. Islam strongly prohibits any act of worship or devotion to any of the creation," he said.

"Islam strictly recommends that is permissible only to the creator of the entire universe - Allah. Muslims are not allowed to prostrate even to the beloved personality of Prophet Muhammad. We have been asked not to perform Namaz, including prostration at the exact time of dawn or dusk to avoid any doubt of resemblance to sun worship," he explained.

Hence it will be an infringement on the fundamental and constitutional right of Muslim children to expect or ask them to participate in this respect. The government should not enforce religious practices of one community on others since it is a violation of the secular principles and against the spirit of equality, justice and liberty, he said.

The hijab row in Udupi College has resulted in resentment and a standoff between the Muslim girls and the management. The girls continued to be excluded from the classes till date. The right choice of dress, practice of one's religious belief is a fundamental and constitutionally guaranteed right which cannot be denied to any individual, he said.

Hijab has never been an obstacle to identity and progress. To deny the same to the girl students at Udupi and as a result deny them dignity and right to education is highly deplorable. The issue should not be politicised and the matter should not lead to polarisation and hatred between the communities, he demanded.

There is no compulsion what so ever and the Circular is there to see for everyone online. I don't think any students irrespective of religion uninterested in Yoga or physical exercise will be forced to conduct it. On the other hand I have seen many women / men from Muslim community learning Yoga in Rishikesh Yoga Schools which includes Surya Namaskar. it is individual choice but, govt asking to promote Yoga cannot be complained about. This is Indian Art like many and this must be promoted in India for well being of people of the country.

This shouldn’t be forced on anyone . Why is this made compulsory ??those students who wish to participate in the sooryanamaskar can go ahead and do it , but no compulsion on anyone ...I remember in dubai during Ramadan non Muslims used to be fined if they ate something in public during the fasting hours claiming Muslims will be tempted and all restaurants were closed till the fast breaks in the evening , now they have changed their rules realizing that such ridiculous laws hamper the progress of their nation but we on the other hand and going back in time .

When people greet one another, they do a 'namaskar'. It is not worship. So, 'surya namaskar' is greeting the sun. Not worship. Regardless, people who do yoga have no health benefits. Yoga is good to increase flexibility. But if you want health, do some real sport that improves lung health, and reduces the chance of diabetes.

I perform Yoga regularly since my childhood days and for the past few years I started to perform Surya Namaskar too, which is one of my most favorite Yogasanas. However, I do it just as an exercise, not as a ritual act. My religion tells me to worship only the Creator, not His creations.

People in UAE and Saudi do yoga without any issues and its popularity is growing year by year ,but people In India have a problem . Even Dubai Police performed at Expo 2020 . Performing Surya Namaskar helps you improve your health ,it is one of the best and easiest exercise and need not go to the expensive gyms or maintain diets to maintain your health and posture and relieves stress . Its free and you can do it at home with limited space. In most of Western countries , they call this exercise as Sun Salute and see big differences in their health . Vitamin D is something extra when you do it under the sun in the morning . Modi should announce as all should breath for 5 minutes and would be fun to see how these haters react .

Rakesh, I have chosen to be agnostic in life and so no problem with standing in front of Sun and I wont call it worshipping, as I feel in Life everything is energy. Sun is off course one major source. The real problem here is governments hidden agenda of promoting one religion over the other. I hope there will be a day where people will be taught all religion broadly, and not one over the other. Today all the religions leads to wealth and power for few and not to heaven. Only the innocent will fall for it.

Why the Christian leaders are still silent? Sun worship is equally abhorrent to followers of Jesus. This move of compulsion is clearly agenda driven and we need to take a firm and principle based stand on the issue instead of maintaining silence. The more you bow down, greater will be the oppression!

Individuals /institution has to register online & participate. if you like it do it else forget it. Do Acting / dancing / martial arts etc have the limits of religion? Then why Yoga? Everything we do has both positive & negative aspect. If you take it as positive you will feel good & if you take negative then you will find bad in everything. Be a Human take positivity from all religion !!!

First of all, what is the connection between Replublic Day celebrations and Surya Namaskar. Why this Govt hell bent in imposing the rules. Me myself being a Christian, I do not have any issues of Surya Namaskar while practising yoga. If someone imposes that I have to do Surya Namaskar for their personal gain, I am against it. Moreover, surya namskar is to synchronise your body with your breath. I do not need to face the sun. This current Govt do not have any concern on the common man's problems. Elections are nearing, and if Muslims or Christians or any other religions oppose this, they have reasons to tell the public that we are against the Indian culture. God save this country from the illiterates !!

Be fitting visionary advise and guidance from an educated/intellectual person. Even Christians need to follow the same principles to refuse to bow down before the Sun. Always respect and bow down the Creator and his creations. Let those who believe in such culture do their rituals. Already there are thousands of rituals and beliefs with them.
