Anand Mahindra responds after Tumakuru farmer's humiliation at SUV showroom

Bengaluru, Jan 26 (IANS): Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra on Tuesday reacted to the incident of humiliation of a farmer at a Mahindra showroom in Tumakuru district in Karnataka, underlining that upholding the dignity of an individual is the core value of the company.

Anand Mahindra took to Twitter to make his stand clear with regard to the incident of the staff of the Mahindra showroom insulting a farmer who came to buy a Bolero pick-up vehicle.

The field officer had reportedly told the farmer, Kempe Gowda, that he didn't have even Rs 10. Gowda then arranged Rs 10 lakh in just 30 minutes and slammed the showroom staffers for the differential treatment meted out to him for his appearance.

Anand Mahindra tweeted on Tuesday, "The Core Purpose of @MahindraRise is to enable our communities & all stakeholders to Rise. And a key Core Value is to uphold the Dignity of the Individual. Any aberration from this philosophy will be addressed with great urgency," quoting a tweet by Mahindra and Mahindra CEO Veejay Nakra.

Gowda, a farmer from Ramanapalya near Hebbur town, taught the employees of the Mahindra showroom a lesson that they should not judge a person by his clothes.

Gowda was insulted by staff when he went to the showroom to purchase a pick-up vehicle. After being insulted, he arranged Rs 10 lakh in 30 minutes and demanded delivery on the same day.

The showroom staff have apologised for their conduct at a local police station. Gowda's quick action and zeal has been appreciated by people from all over the state and his photos and videos of the incident have gone viral on social media.

"I came to make a purchase of a Bolero pick-up vehicle. I had gone to the showroom along with my seven friends and uncle. But the company field officer mocked and chided me that I don't even have Rs 10 with me and how could I have the capacity to purchase the vehicle. The officer also said that no one comes to purchase a car in such a group," Gowda said.

"My uncle then asked him that if we bring the money, will he be able to deliver the vehicle. The field officer challenged that if we managed the money, he would deliver the vehicle immediately and told us to bring the money within half-an-hour," he said.

"I arranged Rs 10 lakh in 30 minutes and placed it in front of the field officer. I had approached the police about the insult caused by the showroom employees. I am an educated man. I have studied till Class 10. What will these people do to farmers from villages," he questioned.

The matter was resolved after the intervention of police. After Gowda arranged the money and demanded immediate delivery of the vehicle, the showroom staff sought three days' time for the same.

There are certain ethics for each place. One must remember this. If this farmer had 10 lakhs cash - why did he not bring it in the first place rather than making a drama or seeking cheap publicity. I don't blame the staff. Car show rooms are NOT charity. Had he brought the cash with him he would have been accorded a Royal Treatment ! Sabse Bada Rupaiah ! You may agree or not agree - its the truth of the day !

A similar incident led to the building of the famous Taj intercontinental hotel in Mumbai after Sir Jamshedji Tata was insulted in a British hotel! "It is said that Jamshedji Tata was inspired to build this hotel after he was refused entry at one of the grandest hotels of British time Watson’s Hotel, which was restricted to ‘whites only. Jamshedji Tata took this as an insult to whole Indians and then decided that he would build a hotel where not only Indians but foreigners could also stay without any restrictions is, and that's how India's first super-luxury hotel came into being. Now Taj is a centre of attraction all over the world."

This is the culture of our society unfortunately. People are judged by their looks and the dress. Some of these farmers are millionaires but they do not show off. Whereas some of the people with suit boots with no money in the pocket live on loans but get respected in public. The field officer of Mahindra showroom is a unfit case for a renowned Vehicle brand and needs to be at the car washing bay. Sometimes being humble and simple has to pay a heavy price in this materialistic society.

In vehicle showrooms in Bangalore too the front office sales personnels are behaving like they themselves are bosses. Try to loot customers in certain areas like exchange bonus accessories, insurance. 1.Customers should prefer to sell old vehicle if any , with outside corporates who deal in second hand vehicles who give much better value. 2.Vehicle insurance should also be obtained by ourselves. Only need based accessories to be preferred. Buying a new vehicle is like a big racket. 3.Compelling to go for vehicle Loan from them. Customers should be aware if their rights first. No.1 , 2nd 3 are their right. Before buying new vehicle always get the help of experienced friend and take him personally with you to the show room.

So proud of this Farmer from my State. A lesson taught to the mindless Sales Executive. Unless Mahindras take action, they will carry a bad name although the Mahindra Boss, Anand Mahindra, is known for his professionalism. Jai Hind

Anand Mahindra should have given the vehicle free or at a deep discount ,and dismissed the persons responsible at the showroom. He had few years back given a vehicle free to a person selling food at roadside in Mangalore, (selling food on roadside is illegal). In this case the money that the farmer had earned was through legal sources. Never judge a person by his clothes, Shri Narayan Murthy used to drive his own Maruti 800 about 15 years back, I have seen Gautam Adani staying at Ratan Pole , Ahmedabad and also on a 2 wheeler ( old Vespa) when the family migrated from Tharad, and our present PM on a Yezdi bike driven by Praveen Togadia at Lal Darwaja Ahmadabad.Smt. Asha Bhonsle used to travel on Bombay suburban train years back. Many great people are down to earth, and do not have ego.

Empty vessels make the Largest Noise ! Likewise there is a proverb in Kannada ತುಂಬಿದ ಕೊಡ ತುಳುಕುವುದಿಲ್ಲ... It is sad that an agency selling products belonging to Sri Anand Mahindra indulged in these antics. We all know what Anand Mahindra stands for 🙏👍Life teaches. Hope the sales staff at Tumkuru agency have learnt a lesson of their life.
