Mangaluru, Jan 30: The Congress high command has appointed former minister and current MLA U T Khader as the deputy leader of Congress Legislative party in Karnataka Assembly.

An order to this effect was sent by K C Venugopal, general secretary of the party.

U T Khader, who in 2018 was elected as MLA for the fourth time from Mangaluru constituency (Ullal) had previously served as minister for health, housing, and civil supplies under the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government.

Thanking Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, Siddarmaiah and others, Khader tweeted that it was his "utmost privilege and honour" to be appointed to the post.

In the 2018 state elections, he was the only Congress MLA to be elected from undivided Dakshina Kannada.

On January 26, the high command appointed B K Hariprasad as the leader of Congress in Karnataka Legislative Council.
