Udupi Hijab row: Students defying govt order sent out of classrooms

Updated

Udupi, Feb 1 (IANS): The protesting Muslim girl students of the Government Girls Pre-University College here, who attended their Class wearing 'hijab' thereby defying the Karnataka governmentorder, were sent out of the respective Classrooms on Tuesday.

The entry to media has been prohibited in the premises of the college and security has been beefed in the campus to avoid any untoward incident.

The government recently issued an order to maintain the status quo in the college until the high-level committee submitted a report on allowing hijab along with uniform.

Incidentally, February 1 is celebrated as World Hijab Day. Aliya Assadi, one of the protesting students, said on her social media platform that the protesting girls will come to the college wearing hijab, which is their religious and constitutional right. "The college is being run on the tax money that we gave to the government. There is no necessity for anyone's interference. Our judicious fight can't be sidelined by threats."

BJP MLA Raghupathi Bhat had earlier stated that the police have been informed about the matter and no outer persons, including those from the Muslim as well as Hindu organisations will be allowed into the campus as the hijab row has put the academic career of the 1,000 students studying in the college at stake. The students have to be ready for examinations, which are going to be held in another two months.

He further stated after holding a meeting that the students, who are protesting for wearing hijab in Classrooms, are being told to come to the college campus only if they decide to shun hijab. "Otherwise, we have clearly told them not to come to the college and spoil the academic environment," he said. On the other hand the students have moved a petition in the High Court seeking relief in this regard.

"We have told them clearly to come to the college only if they have decided to come to class without a hijab. They can't come to the premises of the college and spoil the college academic environment. We have also informed the police regarding the entry of media and other organisations into the campus," he stated.

"In another 2 months exams are nearing. Parents are complaining that every day, international media is coming, various Muslim organisations and Hindu organisations are visiting. There will be no entry to the college from Tuesday. They can submit the memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner," he said.

One among the protesting students moved the state High Court seeking relief. Resham Farooq, the student has said the 'wearing of hijab as a fundamental right under Articles 14 and 25 of the Indian constitution'. The student has sought interim order from the High Court regarding students attending classes wearing hijab.

Earlier report

Udupi: Students to attend classes with hijab defying govt order

Udupi, Feb 1 (IANS): Karnataka hijab row is likely to continue as the students have decided to attend the classes wearing a veil despite the state government banning it in the college campus.

The issue is more likely to be blown into a major controversy as February 1 (Tuesday) is celebrated as the World Hijab Day.

Sources said that students will come to the college but won't shun hijab to attend classes. Police have been informed and no outsider will be allowed into the campus as the hijab row has put the academic career of 1,000 students at stake as they have to prepare for examinations which are going to be held in another two months.

On Monday, MLA Raghupathy Bhat, after holding a meeting at the Government Girls Pre-University College in Udupi, said the students who are protesting for wearing hijab to classrooms are being told to come to the college campus only if they shun it.

"Otherwise, we have clearly told them not to come to the college and spoil the academic environment," he said. On the other hand, the students have moved a petition to the High Court seeking relief in this regard.

"We have told them clearly that they can come to college only if they shun the hijab. You can't come to the premises of the college and spoil the college academic environment. We have also informed police regarding entry of media and other organisations into the campus," he stated.

"In another 2 months exams will be held. Parents are complaining that every day, international media besides various Muslim and Hindu organisations are visiting. There will be no entry to the college from Tuesday. They can submit the memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner, he said.

"There is a government order. The future of 1,000 college students is at stake. It has been said that if the students are coming to college, they can come if they are willing to attend classes without a hijab. Otherwise do not come to college itself. There is no room for confusion anymore. Whoever follows discipline let them come to college," he stated.

Meanwhile, one among the students who are protesting demanding permission to attend classes with hijab has moved to the state High Court seeking relief. Resham Farooq, the student has requested declaration of the wearing of hijab as a fundamental right under articles 14 and 25 of the Indian constitution. The student has sought interim order from the High Court regarding students attending classes wearing hijab.

I studied in a Catholic institution where wearing bangles, rakshabandhan and flowers were not allowed. Although these come under Hindu tradition, each and every Hindu students followed the school uniform code. Because, school is place to pursue to education n gain knowledge,it is not a place to execute our religious practices. Uniform code is maintained in every educational institute for a reason so that there is not partiality in the name of religion n every student is equal. It is a place where one is shaped as an individual with moral values to be a good citizen. It is better to follow the uniform code in every institution whether it belongs to Hindu, Christian or Muslim. If one has to practice their religious outfits then I believe schools belonging to Hindus would accept only Hindu children n schools belonging to Muslims would accept only Muslim students ... But schools irrespective of which religion they belong to, accept students from all religion which means, all students must follow the uniform code irrespective of which religion they belong to. That is why it is called "UNIFORM CODE" .

The Headmaster seems politically driven or has his own political ambition. It's almost childish to have a stand-off with a bunch of kids, who have been taught to follow their religion all their life. But it's also time to petition and press for a revamp of our education by introducing Philosophy, where all schools of relegious thoughts, basic psychology and the tenets of democracy are discussed. It will be funny when extremists of both Hinduism and Islam will one day unite against a growing multiculturally secular society trully protected by law. Seems quite far away...

Is this new drama for election sponsored by any political party? Just like before the last state election "with many killings in South Kanara" who was benefitted? The direct beneficiary of the movement was BJP. Definitely, this movement helps BJP to retain all seats in the region. The base question is why these girls came with love for HIJAAB all of sudden?

Respect to all the religions. Religious costumes may not be the tradition of the state or country. Decent dress code should help the students which does not differentiate them with one another. Head scarf's may be worn by both men and women in countries with higher temperatures to protect them from Sun ( We see Mother Mary and Jesus with head scarfs in many pictures). Same-way, boots and gloves are worn by people of the regions who need to deal with heavy snow. Young children should understand this and live peacefully in a community. As mentioned by many in 80's and 90's these differences were not there. Current political situation throughout the world is making innocent people puppet for their political agenda.

Quote: Mother Mary and Jesus with head scarfs in many pictures unquote. These pictures were drawn by humans. Nobody have personally seen what mother Marry and Jesus were wearing. Of course those people around Israel in the B.C., period have seen and they are not existing. Let me put it Mary and Jesus were wearing morally applicable apparels. D.K. and Udupi are basically 20-34 degree hotness. So fully covering effects are skin disease's. In M.E., except 15 days -1 to +10 degrees. Fully covering with Sox is negligible. I am watching silly and Kalli Walli arguments put forward to defend Hijab and Burqa.

As a Teacher who has taught in many Schools both in the North and the South and having read all comments for and against, as an individual, I strongly feel that all other accessories other than the School or College’s prescribed uniforms should be strictly adhered to with no ifs and buts . All should feel they are of one unit. There should not be any discrepancies or concessions to any religion or community. Pray at home to whatever religion you belong, take blessings and keep the religion at home itself. It is indeed sad that our students are being misled for narrow political or religious gains . The School Staff also will find it uncomfortable when one student wears a ‘ hijab’ or a Namma on the forehead. No one is above the law in any case, either in the Government or in a private establishment.

hindu girls were wearing bindi long, long time b4 & dey were coming 2 school, nobody objected 2 it. punjabi's were also not in karnataka till 1980. muslima's were also not studying till 1980 in karnataka, most male muslims were of da opinion dat females studying in schools is un-islamic. hardly a handful of muslimaas were studying in schools who were wearing salvar khamis w/o hijab or burqa . kattarvaadi's/fundamentally following ksa has liberalized burqa/hijab gloves to their hands & feet's & da females became drivers. whereas in d.k., & udupi dees kattarvaadi/fundamental's have cropped up & making compulsion 2 muslimaas 2 wear burqa & hijab. dis is nothing but a propaganda of their religion. several times i have proposed uniforms 2 all students in schools. now don't bring christian scriptures 2 justify your religious agendas 2 promote selfishness. da christian scriptures & islamic scriptures have day & night difference in every walk of life/scriptural differences.

While speaking generally, in this society, we are seeing Hindus applying Thilak on forehead, hindu girls fix flowers to their hairs, Muslim girls wearing hijab, Muslim boys (rarely) wear caps on heads. But Christians are not exposing their religious symbols (if I am sorry, if I am wrong about Christians). But all these religious symbols are being allowed all over the country. Even exposing all these religious symbols in the schools and colleges, the students are feeling happy and united. But what happened to this particular govt institution? Uniform is introduced to feel unity. Ok. But what is the problem if one wears hijab with regular uniform? We should be united in our hearts. Particularly, in this issue, while a student requests for wearing hijab, the head of the institution should verify such practices in society. It should not reach to the hands of politicians.

When we were kids. We studied in convent school. That time all religion boys or girls dress where same as per school. We cant't find who is hindu who is muslim or Christian. But now a days these communal mind politics entered into school colleges also. They want to divide us in the name of dress. My humble request to all religion followers keep your religion in your home. Don't mingle with outside world. Here we are all equal. One dress one uniform.

That too they used to bring it out when walking out of college gate. Same thing during engineering. But now this has become a menace now, all over the world.

It's school damn it. This is Secular school where every child come to study secular subject. uniform per se is to make every child equal irrespective of caste , religion or social status in the society. The uniform was saving grace for me several other poor students of our times personally when we didn't have any fancy cloths while going to school/... we used to advocate Uniforms even for school excursion because we were unable to match the high branded cloths our fellow classmates used to wear. One of our teacher who could understand our situation and helped us on it. hence we must allow the school to decide what kind of equal cloths the students can wear. the school management , parents and pupil can sit and decide what pattern should be formalized but, it must be Uniform without any hue of craste , creed , religion or social status on it.
