Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Feb 3: The dispute over the wearing of Hijab by the girl students of the government girls PU college here has resulted in standoff between a few girls and the college management. The National Human Rights Commission has served notice to the district administration, directing it to study the issue and file a report on the same within four weeks. The notice was received a couple of days ago.

In the light of the above notice, deputy commissioner of Udupi, Kurma Rao M, formed a committee headed by Kundapur sub-divisional officer K Raju and another headed by Udupi deputy director of PU education. The members of the committee headed by the deputy director of PU education visited the college on Wednesday February 2 and undertook scrutiny.

The deputy commissioner said that the district administration had received notice from the human rights commission asking for a report within four weeks. He said that a new committee therefore was appointed and that its report will be submitted to the commission as soon as the same is received.

A three-member committee headed by the deputy director of PU education, as per the instruction of the deputy commissioner, visited the college. It collected certain details but it did not hold any meeting. A committee headed by the assistant commissioner also will visit the college separately and submit its report, sources said.

This is the reason we need uniform civil code. Hindus have been abiding the law with one marriage etc which took the community further despite having some other issues to address like any other community. Sticking to stone age rules meant for a village in desert in this age is plain repressiveness of the highest order.

COVERING HEAD IS A TRADITIONAL DRESS OF DESERT LAND TO ESCAPE FROM THE SAND DUST. BUT HERE IT HAS BECOME THE DRESS OF SEPARATION. MAINLY TO IDENTIFY THE MUSLIM GIRL AND TO MISBEHAVE WITH ALL OTHER NON MUSLIM GIRLS.

A lot of songs in Hindi films on GHOONGAT, is it all desert tradition??? Even today certain percentage of Hindu woman too wear ghoongat. Covering woman's head is a tradition and practice in India since ages, even before the entry of Muslims to India.

@peacelover, India "GHOONGAT" Yes all these are traditional dresses. Nothing related to religion. After all indian traditions are changing as per the present society/conditions...we don't follow the same mindset of 1500 years old. This is scientific/logical/rational/critical thinking age. Here the topic is "UNIFORM IN THE SCHOOL/COLLEGES"...All traditional dresses can be avoided in public places to feel a sense of equality. We go to school/college to study and not to advertise our religion. Religion or tradition is a private matter outside the school. We have to follow a uniform dress code that is decided by the school authorities.

Sunil, there are many things in all cultures and religion from the long gone past - & I will have to point out irrespective of the attire - those who abode by the religion would follow it. You cant point out that its illogical or barbaric. There's no religion which can be absolute for all demanding facts - Its something above human capacity that we have been leaning on for 1000s of years. Covering head with a scarf is being modest, its not just for one particular religion; you can find it in almost all the religion.

@Anwar, Mangaluru, This is not a lecture session of religion...if you really want to let us decide on it. Now here the point of discussion is "UNIFORM IN THE SCHOOL/COLLEGE" Do you know the meaning of "UNIFORM"???? and why it was mainly introduced???? If you want to advertise your religion...School/College is not the right place. In that logic there are some rich students and parents who want to show up their standard of living(rich life style) by wearing expensive dress. Do you want to allow them? If yes, then where is the necessity of Uniform. In India there are number of religions, it's their private matter. In public places like school and colleges, we are one....our whole purpose is to study and that is the whole purpose of UNIFORM.

If something contradicts once religious belief, it should be discussed. If school rules requires to wear LANGA and we are not comfortable with it, we shall raise it to management to find us a solution. Religious sentiments should be respected whether you like it or not. Its a simple modest piece of cloth covering once head, not a Armani suit to show status like you frame it.

Why other students are feeling uncomfortable with scarf ( a piece of cloth to cover head). are they using Saffron Shawl as weapon to remove the scarf...? if the saffron shawl is really important, then they can use it anywhere even in school, but wearing saffron shawl just because other students wear scarf is not a good idea. Real Hindu brothers and sisters should understand the situation...
