Bengaluru, Feb 6: Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Sunday, February 6 announced that the State Government has asked the Home Department to utilize the 12 police training schools in the state to provide training to the women in self-protection.

He was addressing a function in Bengaluru after inaugurating the Obavva Self Protection Art Training programme organized by the State Social Welfare Department.

The Chief Minister said the State Government planned to start self-protection training for girl students in schools and colleges.

Even though there were several laws to protect women and the government has taken up programmes for the welfare of women, the Chief Minister lamented that some miscreants and evil forces were abusing girls and women. In such situations, it is better to enable the women to protect themselves by providing necessary training in self-protection.

The Chief Minister underscored the need for law, education and home departments to work in coordination with society and work for ensuring the protection, safety and respecting the womenfolk. The efforts of the government to provide training in self-protection to girls and women and make them self-reliant and become self-supportive is very important, he said pointing out that empowered women are the key to progress.

The Social Welfare and Backward Classes Departments have an ambitious plan to provide training in self-protection to girls and the scheme has been named after the valiant woman leader Onake Obavva.

Onake Obavva, Kittur Rani Chennamma, Keladi Chennamma, Belavadi Mallamma were among the inspirations for girls and women, Bommai said and asked the girls to take inspiration from such heroic women.

The Chief Minister said the government has decided to sanction a grant of Rs 12,000 each for 75 new units of NCC being established in the State to mark the 125th birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose with 7,500 new cadets.
