Mangaluru Feb 8: The St Anthony Holy Cross building committee staged a protest here at Kuluru junction on Tuesday, February 8, against the razing down of a prayer centre at Urundadi Panjimogaru.

The protest started with a prayer.

Addressing the protestors, Mangalore diocese PRO Roy Castelino said, "We are a peace loving community. We seek justice over the razing down of prayer centre at Urundadi in Panjimogaru which is 42 years old. The Mangaluru City Corporation has issued us a door number, license, water connection, electricity connection and tax exemption also has been given. We did not violate any law. What was the mistake of the building committee? Notice was not served before razing down the building. Police had assured us to resolve the issue but noting has been even after three days."Former Corporator Mariam Thomas said, "We will fight till we get justice in the issue."

Stany Alvares said, "We demand justice from the police commissioner and deputy commissioner in the issue. Many religious places like temples, mosques and churches exist on government land. This is nothing but a political motivated move."

President of St Anthony Holy Cross building committee Anthony Lobo, vice president of Kulur church Mable Bennis, president of Catholic Sabha, central Council. Diocese of Mangaluru, Stany Lobo, president of District Labour Cell Lawrence D'Souza, parish priest of Kulur church Fr Vincent D'Souza, president of ICYM, Central Council, Diocese of Mangaluru Jaison Crasta and others were present.

Perhaps it was illegally constructed. For sure appropriate notice was given,, No way on earth can any office raze a property without a court order, and communication to the occupant. Even if the property was illegal and a valid reason. Some one has goofed up somewhere and now trying to play the victim card.

As it is there are numerous issues now and all are busy. Moreover help in protests cannot be expected from any other faction. The traditional party that supports also has changed affiliations to woo someone else. So in the best interest of everyone , its advisable to workout a compromise formula and move on.

Demolishing a buidling when there is stay order from the court is violation of the order and police must have arrested the culprits ... police keeping quiet means there is tacit approval from the people in power for demolition... and the so called nationalists wonder why some people dont feel they belong here as equal citizens...

If Government land then there should be a legal way to take it back. Here few are saying it's Government land and some saying that british government given for church. So tommorow government will say your house is government property even we pay tax. And government will demolish your houses. Then are we keeping quite. In India we have equal rights to live.

I believe most of the protesters aware that, there is no point in fighting for government land , retaining encroachments without any formal land grant order by tahashildar or DC. Demolition would take place even otherwise except structures existing prior to 1947. Please do not invest your money on government land without any formal grant order. Politicians officers oral assurances not enough

David - you can assume that hindu structures are exempted from these problems in Hindustan. You can see in many places natives have better deals with the government than migrants. Those discrimination exists even before 1947, and locals do get more exemptions throughout this world. That is not new thing!

If at all it is a government land, then it is the duty of the MCC or Tahsildar to serve notice for evacuation. Above all there is a stay order from the court. The police have powers to arrest the offenders for breaching court order, without the need for filing FIR.

The high court should take cognisance of the demolition and bring all in the involved in the illegal demolition to book, file an FIR and punish them accordingly. If something has been destroyed when the matter was sub judice it simply means that 'law and order' has failed. It is a mockery of the law and courts. Blatant display of fascism

Temple is a God's house. If it is razed God will fight as he said battle is mine and victory is yours. Let God fight and you wait for the victory. You are a peace loving people. why do you protest. Leave it on God. Pray for them. Jesus says do not cry for me, but cry for yourself and your children. Temples will not save you but Jesus and his word.
