Mangaluru, Feb 9: The contract given to Antony Waste Handling Cell Pvt Ltd to manage the waste accumulated in the city has been extended by a year. The government is yet to issue official communication in this regard.

Even though the city corporation had called for fresh tenders in 2010, later it had entered into a tender agreement with Antony Ltd in 2014 and the company began to clear waste in the city in February 2015. Its contract period ended in January this year but the corporation had proposed to the government to extend the contract with the company by a year as the fresh tender procedures takes very long.

After the company began the work of managing the waste generated here, there have been many changes. Mostly all the houses and flats are sorting the waste now. Apartment complexes having more than 30 flats are managing wet waste at source. The system of segregating wet waste and handling it at source has caused loss to Antony Ltd as the daily waste collection has gone down from 300 tonnes every day to around 250 tonnes now. The company is paid on a tonnage basis and therefore reduced weight results in less revenue.

Annually, the city corporation pays around Rs 3.25 crore to the company for waste management including sweeping of the streets. Tender process beginning in the year 2023 will be held by the end of this year. Detailed project report of Ramakrishna Mission Mangaluru and the corporation agency have been submitted already.
