Bengaluru, Feb 10: With a three-member bench of Karnataka High Court passing an interim order directing that high schools and colleges in the State should be opened from Monday with students adhering to the stipulation that nobody should wear any kind of religious symbols and attire, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai has urged the people to have self-restraint on the school and college uniform issue to maintain peace over the hijab vs saffron shawls row.

Speaking to media representatives on Thursday, February 10, the Chief Minister appealed to all sections of the people not to do anything or speak that might disturb peace and harmony.

The State Government had ordered three-day closure of all high schools and colleges in order to ensure that the students and their studies should not be affected. The issue is now pending before the three-judge bench of the High Court. It is advisable to await the judicial order, he said.

Bommai said everybody must respect and honour the court orders and also ensure that the courts are able to decide on the issue in a dispassionate manner without any law and order problems in the State. In a democracy, court orders must be obeyed by everybody, he said.

The Chief Minister underscored the need to be sensitive on the issue of Children and Students.

The Chief Minister kept himself busy throughout the day with department-wise pre-budget discussions with the ministers concerned and all senior officials.

In the morning, the Chief Minister paid floral tributes to former Chief Minister Kengal Hanumanthaiah to mark his 114th birth anniversary by garlanding the statue in front of Vidhana Soudha.

Later, he released the Nadaprabhu Kempegowda’s calendar and logo of the Kemegowda Heritage Development Authority.

The honorable CM urges restraint on the public. But his own MLAs and ministers pass orders arbitrarily totally in contradiction of the policies spelled out on the PUC board's website. First advise them and and have them get themselves informed and properly educated.

Instead of telling the people to have restraints the elected representatives, MLA’s including the CM should depend the constitutional rights of all people . If they are that concerned about only Hijab , Then there should be uniform dress code for all the politicians instead of having different clothing which is prevalent only in India. I remember that there was a big controversy when president Obama had worn tan colored suit. Indian constitution allows the right of religion, language etc; Then why all of sudden this problem. If India wants to do progress then the politicians have to preach tolerance between different groups of people. Unity in diversity is the right mantra. Even though India has majority Hindus , the Muslim population also is second highest in the world. If the majority think they can be happy by putting down the minority ultimately the whole country is going to suffer . It’s like living in a glass house and cultivating enmity with the neighbor. Best solution is respect each other and their religion and be a good human being.peterdsouza

Let's stop this new sense..Let student wear as per their choice. Ladies wear hijab and safroon scraf .but make sure they haveh to wear on the head to cover their forehead . If boys also want to wear safroon scraf allow them to wear but like girls. Why uniform if their not happy with that let them choose what they want ,you cannot force. It's been ages college students wearing colourful dresses and there wasn't anything worry about. It's been few years colleges were implemented uniform that too students are unhappy. Again go back to the same old policy so everyone Happy specially students.

A Pandora's box has been opened. Why restrict dress code for girls only in educational institutions ? Isn't wearing bindi, tikka, threads over wrists etc also religious dress/tradition ? How about the turbans worn by Sikh students ? Secondly, why restrict to educational institutions, and why not in all Govt offices and in public places atteded by Govt servants including the MPs and MLAs ? Remember, just a week ago our PM inaugurated the STATUE OF EQUALITY at Hyderabad. What an irony. What did the statue signify ? Equality for whom ?
