'Wearing hijab will protect Muslim women from getting raped': Zameer Ahmed

Dharwad, Feb 14 (IANS): Karnataka Congress MLA B.Z. Zameer Ahmed Khan stirred a controversy here on Sunday by stating that incidents of rape are on high in India and wearing hijab will protect Muslim women from getting raped in the country.

Defending his statement, MLA Khan has stated that he only gave his point of view and he doesn't know what others think on the issue. "The beauty of women is not supposed to be exposed. No one should set their eyes upon them. Muslim women have been wearing hijab since long back," he maintained.

"Few people among us do not wear hijab. It is not mandatory to wear hijab, however I have asked our women to wear hijab for their safety. Please come to debate with me after getting the statistics of rape in the country," he added.

He maintained that according to Islam "everyone should perform namaz for five times" but many do not perform. "If women wear hijab, the incidents of rape would come down," he said.

Earlier in the evening, the Congress MLA in Hubballi has stated, "Hijab means purda in Islam and if women don't wear hijab there are chances of them getting raped. Why there is an increase in rape cases in the country? It is because women are not behind purda (hijab). Women should wear hijab to conceal their beauty.".

"Wearing hijab is right of Muslim women. They have been wearing hijab for hundreds of years. The government took the issue very lightly when it began."

Further students as the assets of the nation, the Congress MLA said, "Ruling BJP is using students for political gains and they are ready to sacrifice anybody to attain power."

You say you want to wear a Hijab but you come wearing Burqa. Please can you make clear to yourself what is Hijab and Burqa according to you? I'm confused when you say Hijab but I see some students not in uniform but in BURQA with a full cover of the face from head to toe. Any shawl or dress should be part of the school uniform color and identity of the student known in the school, classroom, and with classmates. In this present world, it is good to know the identity of the person in the society for a healthy and vibrant community and cities. If a person keeps covered hiding the face to others around them then are we living in a virtual alien world or as a thief who wants to be in the dark of society? Please can people with sense understand and avoid.

@Nawaz, Udupi/ Kuwait - Are you for real? How further low can your mindset even go? You are expecting Muslim women to even cover their body head to toe even inside the sanctuary of their own home!! Get real my friend. I have been to beaches of many western country (and in Dubai too) on a hot summer day, and saw lots and lots of skin and ZERO rape. A bikini does not equate to rape, and extending the same logic, a hijab does not equate to protection from rape. By your logic Kabul perhaps should be the safest place Muslim women right now. Which woman from you family is ready to move there? Stop defending a religion which does not believe in woman's individual identity, and considers all men wanting to have XXXX with every woman.

@Rampanna, If you have any comparative data with respect to rape cases in these so called Islamic States (according to you) and (say) USA. In USA every 1 in 7 women have been raped in her lifetime; and rape takes place every 1-2 minute. If you consider attemt to rape also as a rape, then 1 in 5 are being raped in a lifetime. ..... You further said that - "Statistically speaking +95% of assault on women are by men who personally know her rather than some stranger in the street (Yes, that means it is the husband, father, brother, uncle, in-laws, relative, and the neighbor). You don’t have to believe me, just check the NCRB data". What do you want to say? Who denies that most of the cases are from person known to the victim? One can cover her body even in front of the so called relatives, in- laws, neighbours and cousins when it stops them from being targeted.

Hahaha.you r too good, man. you should all take your own advise -cover up in this heat and stay away from all men, women .in fact ,all u who believe women should be covered head to toe should also follow the logical corollary- which is no man should gaze on uncovered women . Then you are a sinner ,yes! Why go out? Here ,all r uncovered. Observe full religious orders. Stay at home.

Whatever anyone may argue; I have seen myself in my student life how the fellow male students used to behave and talk vulgarly by looking at each passing female students. Now, i am not saying at this moment who is right and who is wrong; the point is about how you are being protected form any one among them who has planned something bad for you. The natural solution is to cover yourself completely for you to be not being judged by your physical appearance; be it by Hijab or Burqa or any other full/ loose dress which will protect you from the evil eyes.

The ideal solution is to make boys also wear hijab, burkah etc. Why only girls need protection? Even boys need protection.

What a bizarre statement from a Muslim MLA who betrays lack of education. Just see those wearing burqa (the full black dress); they look like human devils, you want to see them that way or frighten young children of other faiths. It is so different from scarf (the hijab). Muslim girls wearing hijab (scarf) look so pretty and God made them so. It is the rape minded boys/men - coming from all creeds - that are the problem, and there are better ways to protect them. Send bodyguards (preferably eunuchs) to guard them if you want, day and night. You do that in your harems.

You are partially correct and partially wrong. It is Hindu upper caste raping Hindu lesser caste girls in India predominantly in UP, MP & other states. But Muslim men, celebrities as well as commoners alike. marry other caste girls, while keeping their girls safe in bhurkas.

Hijab protects Muslim women from Rape. Some muslim women don't wear Hijab you mean its invitation to be raped, for that matter other religion women don't wear hijab is that means they are provocative or seductive. TEACH YOUR(All) BOYS TO BEHAVE AND TO RESPECT WOMEN. Your statement is as pathetic as your thought

Mr. Zameer Ahmed your statement Is absolutely wrong. Who is raping who? men rape wonen isn't it? Teach your boys to protect girls and you yourself behave well towards ladies in the family. Good family boys can never rape girls. Hijab has nothing to do with rapes. If Hijab prtocted girls from rapes then in pakistan no rapes would happen

If his logic is right there should be mass rapes in Western countries, it happens in every place irrespective of the nature of clothing. However, exposure of body parts may encourage would be rapists. Decent dress with Hijab or without Hijab will not have any special impact.

He is absolutely right!! In countries/ communities practicing strict Islamic code like Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, Iraq, Yemen, Syria, Somalia, Saudi, ISIS-areas, etc. women are so safe that may be this MLA should send all the women folk from his family to live in one of those places. What a pathetic statement? Statistically speaking +95% of assault on women are by men who personally know her rather than some stranger in the street (Yes, that means it is the husband, father, brother, uncle, in-laws, relative, and the neighbor). @Mangalurian, Do you think all women wear burqa in Pakistan and Egypt?. If you want to make a fair comparison, make a comparison where you get the number of women who were raped and percentage of women wearing the burqa among them. Your comaprison is like you are predicting the GDP of Uttar Pradesh based on the GDP data of (say) South Indian states.
