Udupi: Friction over headscarf erupts again as college urges girls to remove Hijab

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (HB/SP)

Udupi, Feb 16: Dr G Shankar government women's first grade college at Ajjarkad here witnessed verbal friction after on Wednesday February 16 after the principal asked over 20 girl students enter the classrooms without Hijabs as per the interim order of the high court.

He also got the others who were wearing the Hijabs seated in separate room and tried to convince them to follow the high court instructions.

One of the students, Afra, told the media that they are being pressured all of a sudden to follow the directions of the government. She said that right from the first day, they have been wearing the Hijabs and that the new decision was taken all of a sudden.

"Some Muslim girls are shedding tears while some more are leaving their classes," she said.

However, she later said that the college administration is supportive of the students and that they respect the stand taken the college. "We will go home today. The principal has promised to hold online classes. This confusion has arisen because of the court decision. None of us are protesting now. The college administrative council was polite in asking us to remove our Hijabs and to enter the college thereafter," she stated.

Principal of the college, Bhaskar Shetty, said that as per the court order, the students are not allowed to wear Hijabs when attending the classes, which he said, had been explained to the students and that the students have said they will wait for the court orders.

"Out of 2,326 girl students of the college, 196 are Muslims. 40 among them are against removing the Hijabs. We will take a decision about making alternative arrangements for the students who are not attending the classes. We will maintain the status quo till the high court order is received," Shetty stated. He further said that the students have been allowed to move around the college campus wearing the Hijabs.

One of the guardians of the girl students identified as Haneef, noted that the court has ordered to maintain status quo. He objected to the fact that the girl students were asked to remove their Hijabs seated separately. He added that he and other parents will not allow their children to remove the Hijabs, and said that because of the controversy, parents are fearful about sending the children to the college. He stated that he firmly believes religion to be an integral aspect of education and therefore Hijab must be allowed in classrooms.

Why no one is opposing..., in UAE they changed weekly off from 'Friday-Saturday' to 'Saturday-Sunday'? Since how many decades or Centuries it was there (Friday weekly off, being Muslim Countries)! Imagine, if that situation was in India!

It is important to note that, over the past couple of decades the twin district Muslims are coming up in all sphere of the society - which was possible b'coz of good education... now a days lot of Muslim girls also coming up as Doctors/Engineers/CA's/Lawyers etc., This may be the conspiracy of the Majority to make Muslim girls sit at home... by raising Hijab to keep them backward.... (In my view Muslim think tank must agree for the Muslim girls to wear Hijab up to class & then let them be one among all..., for their own community benefit... else they are only the loosens) , all this while temple time Udupi was know for its peaceful existence let it continue...need everyone's support....

He admitted in his interview that the college rule book has given permission to wear hijab since 2009. Similarly most of the college managements across the state have violated their own rule in a shamefull manner and held respinsible for deprive from getting education for hijabi students.

Noni don't understand one thing. These girls told they have full confidence in the courts and will abide by the court orders. For the time being if the court has ordered that headscarfs are not allowed why can't you follow this decision? This is not even the final verdict and y'all are behaving like this..

Hijab/Saffron Shawl issue is going explode into a communal rift if not resolved and controlled immediately. School administration must think in terms of peace and communal harmony to maintain peaceful society. Please do not give reason to explode and create blood bath. World is observing all such anti communal and ani minority movement in the garb of School uniform and religious significance. RSS backed shawls gained popularity and National symbolism only after BJP/RSS came to power and there, over night came all saffron political agenda to trouble minorities. We are training the youth into indiginous agents of terror !

"Out of 2,326 girl students of the college, 196 are Muslims. 40 among them are against removing the Hijabs !! Interesting statistics !! May be only one girl student in a class wants to wear Hijab, Which can be and should be tolerated in a diverse society like India... Reforms pressure should be created through the top community leadership through a long process and not harass the innocent school going children.
