Mangaluru, Feb 16: Police commissioner N Shashi Kumar on Wednesday, February 16 said that as many as 28 students in two colleges of the city had been sent back home after they were denied entry in classrooms for wearing Hijab.

Pre-university and degree colleges reopened on Wednesday after days of being shut over the Hijab versus saffron shawl row. The high court which is still hearing the case had last week passed an interim order stating that until the final judgement is pronounced, students shall not be allowed to wear any religious attire to schools and colleges.

Addressing a press meet here, the police commissioner said that girls who came wearing Hijab were sent back home in two colleges, while in four others they were allowed into the class after they agreed to remove Hijab.

"Colleges have reopened, and friction over Hijab occured in six colleges. The colleges concerned denied entry to Hijab wearing students based on the high court's order. In four colleges, students removed Hijab and returned to class. Two Hijab wearing students in Dayanand Pai degree college and 26 in Pompei college returned home," he said.

A total of 22 Hijab wearing students in Mudipu college and 11 in Montepadavu college were allowed into classrooms after they agreed to remove Hijab.

The police commissioner also said that no incident of students wearing saffron shawls was reported in any of the colleges.

How happy the police officer is to say '28 girls sent back home'! We are going backwards..... The laws we bring should have positive effects. Sending back home is not the solution.

A law enforcer should practice the law himself before enforcing it on the people. Just because you got tickled by my truth you cant catagorize my comment as silly. No doubt Mr Shashi Kumar is doing a great job in policing duties but he needs to first follow the law himself.

Dear Parents, if you are hell bent on disrespecting the interim Court order and disrespectful about the Educational Institutions, instead of spoiling the peaceful atmosphere of Schools and Colleges, plz keep your wards at home till the Court order comes out! Do not create drama and disturb other deserving students!

They say they want to wear a Hijab but they come wearing Burqa. Please can they make clear what is Hijab and Burqa according to them? I'm confused when they say Hijab but I see some students not in uniform but in Burqa with full cover of the face from head to toe. Any shawl or dress in all Education Institution should be a part of the school uniform colour and identity of the student known in the school, classroom, and with classmates. In this present world, it is good to know the identity of the person in the society for a healthy and vibrant community. If a person keeps covered hiding the face from others around them then are we living in a virtual alien world and as a person who wants to be isolated in the dark of society? Please can people with sense understand and avoid.

burqa is head to toe covering specially in a black cloth/recently any other color cloth is accepted. hijab is just covering head and necks up to bosom.

People don't mind change -- They mind the way they are changed--- Be it following new guidelines -- new practices for the betterment etc -- While Hijab etc some may argue is regressive this particular ongoing issue -- is snowballing -- all because of narrow minded politicians who have an hidden agenda- not in any special interests for betterment -- THAT IT IS TAKING The form of polarising politics is obvious --- Now just to win elections if societies are divided we as a Country have a Grave future -- All our greats -- FREEDOM FIGHTERS -- highly qualified -- Barristers etc etc ---- who went on Fast -- very many times -- faced lathis -- Jails -- abuses -- hangings -- Have thought in great depth apart from asking the British to leave ---what best suits for India and for this reason various articles in Constitution were incorporated -- To protect one -- and all- be it so called majority -- minority-- so on -- and so forth -- Today half baked politicians / leaders --limited -- education -- are wading in and creating needless controversies --

Until the High Court gives verdict, their instructions to students to report only in prescribed uniform is not being adhered to by certain sections of community. This is unfair and they are not respecting judiciary that means.

Well Done Sir! Sorry to say this . Irrespective of party affiliations or being from the minority, I fully agree with the actions of Commissioner Mr, Shashi Kumar. Its just a handfull of students spoiling the decorum of the educational institution. Surely there is an external hand/s on this episode thats prompting parents or students . Being a teacher I feel sorry for the other students who have come to study and suffer.
