Bantwal: Jasmine cultivation makes waves in Sajipamunnur village

Bantwal, Mar 3: Indira Nagar and Sharada Nagar of Sajipamunnur village of the taluk are going to spread aroma of Jasmine flowers as 10 women of these towns have started cultivating Jasmine.

Self-help groups and members of Pragati Bandhu teams are given inspiration to start self-employment by the Dharmasthala rural development scheme. Accordingly, under Jnanavikasa women programme, 25 Jasmine saplings each were given to 10 women of Sajipamunnur village and they were given training also on how to take care the plants.

Project officer Jayanand and Jnanavikas coordinating officer Swapna have encouraged the members of these self-help groups with the guidance of district director of Dharmasthala rural development project Sathish Shetty.

Jasmine growers of Sajipamunnur have shown that Jasmine can be grown even in small area. Out of the 10 houses of the village, five are cultivating Jasmine on their terrace. The other five are using their verandah for the same. Sowmya, Ashmitha, Baby, Bhavani, Sarojini, Bharathi, Yashoda, Hemalatha, Prema and Kusuma have involved themselves in Jasmine cultivation and are weaving new dreams.

The new Jasmine growers expressed their happiness about the new venture. Dharmasthala rural development scheme is inspiring these women to be self-reliant in life. Now many others of Sajipamunnur have come forward to cultivate Jasmine on their land.

Ashimtha, one of the cultivators of Jasmine, said, “We have high expectation from the Jasmine cultivation. Officers of the project are guiding us.”

“I did not know that Jasmine cultivation can be done on small area. Now we are doing it on the terrace and verandah of our houses,” said Baby one of the Jasmine growers.

Sathish Shetty, district director, Dharmasthala rural development scheme, Dakshina Kannada says, “Our rural development scheme is inspiring many villagers to lead a self-reliant life. Members can get handsome income through Jasmine cultivation. Complimentary training and guidance is being given to them through Jnanavikasa centres.”

    Darmasthala does a lot of good in twin districts without any trumpeting or fanfare.

    Extremely happy to see this development. Govt must encourage local agri business. Jasmine growers are the least supported right now. With immense potential this can be a boon for local population. Right now due to several issues like lack of labor, pest problems this business is limited to house holds. We must have perfume base manufacturing factories to support lean periods. MSP must be provided.
