Udupi: 40 girl students shun PU examination citing Hijab ban

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Mar 30: The first PU examination began on Tuesday March 29 and 40 girl students from the district who have decided to not appear for the examination without wearing the Hijabs, have stayed away from appearing for the examination. They are reportedly not happy with the high court order on Hijab and plan to wait for the Supreme Court verdict on the issue.

Twenty-four girl students from Kundapur, 14 from Byndoor and two from Udupi government girls PU college have not appeared for the exams. The girls from Udupi had also abstained from the practical exams held earlier.

Out of 14 Muslim girl students of Kundapur government PU college, eight have stayed away while 13 out of 28 girl students of R N Shetty PU college appeared for the examination. Nine among the absentee students came to the examination centre with Hijabs and sought permission to appear for the examination. Some also argued with the principal demanding to reimburse fees in the absence of permission to appear for the examination with Hijabs. In Bhandarkar's college, four out of five girl students appeared for the examination while all the girl students of Basrur Sharada College appeared for the examination.

Six among the eight girl students of Navunda government PU college remained away. Out of ten Muslim girl students of Byndoor government PU college, two appeared. In some private colleges where Hijabs are allowed with uniforms, the girl students attended the examination with Hijabs.

Considering the present scenario, I don’t think hijab would be allowed anymore in schools and colleges. Mark my words, in the coming days it would also be extended to workplaces too, so that the hijab-clad women cannot work. The situation is going out of control. Nobody had thought a few years ago that such things would happen in India that are happening now. Karnataka and in particular ನಮ್ಮ ಕುಡ್ಲ is now on the world map for wrong reasons. If it’s just those rogue groups who are hell bent to stop hijab in schools, it could have been contained and resolved, however when the government too is going hand in hand with these groups, there is no way to prevent such hooliganism. The school / college managements should have issued an advanced notification during students’ admission that hijab would not be allowed so that the students would have had option either to join or opt out of such college. If they don’t allow the students to enter their college in the middle of their academic year or during exams, then it’s nothing but their high-handedness. They just cannot play with the lives of students. For me it looks like the college administration have sold themselves to those radical groups. // Having said, I would like to give a piece of advice to the Muslim students who too are stubborn, to stop wearing the hijab as it’s not more important than completing your education. If you continue with your arrogance, they will not allow you to complete your education, which is what these rogue groups want. By not wearing the hijab you are not committing sin. If you can’t attend exams, you will fail in your mission. So stop your ego and complete your exams and do very well in the exams.

Who in the party will do it ? Thats the biggest question. What ever they do ends in a funny incident and is forgotten. As it is the party is down in the dumps without any revival in sight. 2023 and 2024 is already gone for this party. New entrants are out to be the major opposition .

They cannot achieve both the goals. Either lose your education oriented career or continue with stubborn act of non-compliance with High court ruling. (less chances of SC going against HC order)

This is result of influence of Parents' mindset. If the children were motivated to attend exmas, they would have appeared. Anyways, it is question of keen on education/future career or not. Personal choice is the key.

Unfortunately these girls dont realize that they are being used as pawns in this contiversy and only they will stand to loose. Dont get intoxicated by religious fundamentalist beleifs when muslim nations themselves have shunned these regressive practices. Get on with your education and progress , else you will have to live behind closed doors for the rest of your lives. Always be tealistic ,logical and strike a balance bewteen faith and reality...

I understand its none of my business, but sorry to say girls, being a teacher my heart goes out to you. Its apparent that you have dug their own graves. So what next? Enrolling in a religious school ? The irony is, In Afghanistan Schools have closed for girls and the law of 'no education to girls' have come into force. Here though we have the facility we are shunning it .

Real Kujuma. Seriously? So you justify this act of 'shunning education ' by these girls? What if they were your children or siblings? So girls have to be only 'child bearing machines'?

Think of someone you know who has made a mistake. Do you spend all your time thinking about that issue?Probably not. Humans spend most of their time thinking about themselves, and humans have lots of ways of reconciling, forgiving and forgetting. These guilty feelings can be especially bad in certain ways. This is going to affect them in future.

To cover head with hijab is essential part of Islam for Women as per Quran teachings. So we muslims believe life hereafter. So There is nothing to lose for not attending exam without Hijab. InshaAllah we will get reward in this life and hereafter. We should have strong belief on this.

Most of the girls are from government schools and economically week households. It's hard for the parents to adopt to the abrupt and sudden social changes. Onus is on their community leaders for a progressive counselling of the parents. Hope sense prevails.
