17 Colleges to be Closed in Karnataka Due to Poor Student Strength

Bangalore, Feb 23, (PTI): Seventeen government degree colleges in Karnataka are being closed down because of poor student strength.

Higher Education Minister V S Acharya said these colleges had a student headcount of less than 50 each. Among them are degree colleges in Hassan and Holenarasipura, where the student strength was as low as 13 and 19, respectively.

He said the students there would be absorbed in nearby government degree colleges. No new government degree colleges would be opened in the coming financial year and neither was there any application seeking permission to open private ones. In fact, 19 private colleges have approached the Government seeking grant-in-aid.

Acharya said there were 1,500 vacancies of lecturers in Government degree colleges, adding, a proposal to fill them had been sent to the Finance Department for approval to hire quality talent numbering 300 each in five-phases.

He said talks with managements of private professional colleges were expected to be held soon in regard to fee structure and seat structure (the percentage of seats to be reserved for Government quota in those colleges).

Supreme Court is slated to decide a case in this regard on February 25; talks are expected to commence with private professional colleges thereafter. "We are open for talks", the Minister added.

NOT ONLY 19 COLLEGES, THERE ARE SEVERAL KANNADA MEDIUM GOVT. SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES ARE IN THE VERGE OF CLOSURE. NOW PEOPLE NEED EDUCATION TO THEIR CHILDREN TO COMPETE IN THE JOB MARKET FOR NATIONAL&INTERNATIONAL LEVEL.WE SHOULD START TEACHING ENGLISH IMMEDIATELY FROM THE 1ST STD IN GOVT. KANNADA MEDIUM SCHOOLS.

ANOTHER PROBLEM IS NON AVAILABILITY OF LABOUR FOR AGRICULTURE, CARPENTARY, MASONRY, COOLY ETC. ETC. THESE ALL BECAUSE OF OUR POOR EDUCATION SYSTEM. SINCE WHEN THE 7TH STD PUBLIC EXAMN. ABOLISHED THE LABOUR PROBLEMS STARTED. IT IS BECAUSE OF OPENING THE GATE AT 7TH STD. NOW THE STUDENTS WHO FAILED IN ALL SUBJECT ALSO PERMITTED TO GO AHEAD TILL 10TH STD. BUT IN 10TH STD IF HE ATTEMPTS 10TH TIME ALSO HE WILL NOT PASS THE 10TH STD AND NEVER GO FOR AGRICULTURE OR OTHER LABOUR CLASS WORKS. HE WILL KILL THE TIME SIMPLY ATTEMPTING DIFFERENT COURSES OR ADMITTING TO CATERING SERVICE.

IF SUCH STUDENTS ARE PROHIBITTED AT 5TH OR 7TH STD WHICH IS ENOUGH SUFFCIENT FOR THE ABOVE WORKS THERE WILL NOT BE THE PRESENT LABOUR PROBLEMS. THEY WILL TURN FOR THEIR 'KULA KASABU' OR FOR ABOVE MENTIONED WORKS. OUR GOVT. SHOULD SERIOUSLY THINK ABOUT THE ABOVE PROBLEMS AND CHANGE THE EDUCATION SYSTEM IMMEDIATELY. EDUCATION IS NOT ONLY MEANT TO CREATE OFFICERS, IAS,CA'S OR LYRICS . EDUCATION SHOULD NOT BADLY EFFECT ON OTHER CATEGORY OF WORKS.WE CAN EAT FOOD. NOT MONEY, GOLD OR COMPUTERS.

@Vincy (Shamboor): I hope u might be knowing that who was responsible to start giving government jobs on Religion/Cast based. I dodnt think that I need to mention it once again. BJPO has worked to increase the infrastucture. But what one can do if no child is opting to study in Gov Colleges or schools? Will you ready to send ur child (if u have) to govt college. Leave abt Govt College will u send them to Kannada medium school in this modern time? I bet u U will never do that. About me I cant say now as I m unmarried. and morever I studied in kannada medium. So instead of pointing at BJP gov for each and everything its better to keep quiete. Did previous govt.s worked on increasing Infrastructure? if yes will you please give me one example... I will be glad to see that. Thanks.

There are many new schools and colleges built not by government money but by the contribution of generous people around us.There are many religious or trusts are involved in making arrangement so that the literacy rate has shot up in the past few years. It is definitely not by free bicycles and free sarees.it could be a trust head or a religious head along with their supporters have worked hard made schools and other educational institutions.
The reasons for less of number of students in government run schools and colleges are only because of the government policies in ing the faculty. The reservations in appointing teachers have created and jeopardized the quality of teachers in many government run Institutions. Many at times candidates are not ed on Educational merit and marks but ed on certificate of which class and group they belong.
Earlier the governments never had funds to spend on education as the number of tax payers and other revenue was limited. Since the globalization and out sourcing of many International companies ,Indian tax payers are increased treamoundesly. That means the government has ample inflow of tax payers money which should be spent on education and thus create more educated people for such jobs created due to globalization and out sourcing to India from developed countries.
The state government has 1500 vacancies but do not have time to sort our the problems and appoint these posts by simply calling a entrance test or appoint them based on merit.
V.S Acharya being a doctor has knowledge of education and powers to save these colleges and fill the vacancies in government colleges. If he failed do so, there will be more empty colleges in the near future.

Closing an institution should not be priority. While education cess being collected from every citizen from Indirect Taxes, even poorest of the poor is paying cess while purchasing any item, what is the problem to the govt to take care of expenses. Stop all rallies and fund these institutions so that small locations will have the previllages. Do not exhibit incompetency by closures. Even 10 students should have the right to education at the nearest location

Shame on BJP govt. They are not bothered poor students who have registered in Govt. colleges due to less fees and now they are closing these colleges.
Instead of improving the infra structure, they are closing the colleges. Ultimately the poor studnets will suffer.

Degree Colleges of state which are sickened with staff shortage and mismanagement likely to disappear further from the scene due to more students looking for job oriented courses. When we look @ the elementary school of Kannada Medium, there also students are less than before which may result in closure due shortage of students for the reason of End Med school and population control. effect.
