Should there be a lesson on Jinnah in syllabus?: K S Eshwarappa

Bagalkot, May 26 (IANS): Criticising the textbook revision row in Karnataka, senior BJP leader and former Minister, K.S. Eshwarappa on Thursday asked if a lesson on Muhammad Ali Jinnah should also be included in the syllabus.

The statement has already stirred a controversy, adding to the confusion surrounding the textbook revision row in Karnataka.

The government has appointed the Textbook Revision Committee headed by thinker Rohith Chakrathirtha. The committee has reviewed Kannada language textbooks of 1st to SSLC (Class 10) and Social Science textbooks of classes 6-10. The state government has also asked the committee to revise the history textbook of II PUC.

Coming down heavily on the people who are objecting to the inclusion of a lesson containing the speech of RSS founder K.B. Hedgewar, Eshwarappa said it was to introduce the culture of the land and patriotism to the students.

"Do you think there should be a lesson included on Mughal king Aurangazeb who destroyed Shivling? Till date students read the lesson of Alexander the Great," he maintained.

"Our students read about glorification of those who destroyed our country and culture. If Hedgewar's ideologies were not spread in the country, our nation would have been divided by now."

He maintained that the news of dropping lessons of freedom fighter Bhagat Singh and social reformed Narayana Guru have been part of propaganda.

He stated that Hedgewar strived to unite the Hindu community in 1925.

"Terrorists are creating havoc in the country despite the awareness that is being brought among Hindus. The government has decided to preserve the culture of the land," Eshwarappa explained.

"Progressive thinkers do not want unity and awareness among Hindus. They cherish a wish to include lessons of destroyers of the nation. Everyone should agree what is constitutional."

In the school lessons it is better to include life stories of good people. In such case Jinnah, Eshwarappa and the likes should not be considered. But when we are speaking about our history every human being in this country needs to know the history of our country whether it is good or bad. You can not choose good history only. History is history but our unpad leaders do not understand this. Only education does not make one educated but he should learn common sense. It is very shocking to see that BJP leaders are behaving like uneducated lot. In my opinion they lack common sense. Jai Karnataka.

Jinnah is Advani’s the founder of BJP’s countryman. How can BJP insult and be disloyal to Jinnah?. Being disloyal and insulting Jinnah is same as doing to Advani. Lesson to children about Jinnah is the same lesson as Advani.

Why not? he is a figure from history who was responsible for partition and creation of Pakistan. Do you mean to teach children that Pakistan does not exist? By learning historical facts you don't become the subject's worshipper or bhakt. Don't you read about Hitler and Pol Pot in school?

He was loyal to the Queen and British Parliament just as Gandhi and Nehru even after independence. He was a figure head under whom British carved out a buffer state to take on Communist Russia, that which the Gandhi and Nehrus of the time would never have approved. Both Jinnah and his sister Fatima Jinnah were immediately made irrelevant after the formation of Pakistan empowered by the Marshall race which was selectively inducted to British army prior to independence. Divide and rule, separate state for Muslims etc., were the prevailing narrative of the time and tools at the hands of British, but reality was different - the former is part of our text book even today and the latter (earlier part of this passage) was never part of any syllabus. Finally, can we be pointed to some books, editorials of that time, which could have highlighted the intellectual capacity of Jinnah that he is in our textbooks still? Jinnah is touted as a Barrister when he never passed any exam needed to hold a degree in law. Under the circumstance, yes, true history of Jinnah should be part of our syllabus.

Oye Maya... long post … little substance... "when quantity is more, quality will be less" "Mohammed Ali Jinnah was sent to England by his father to acquire business experience, but he was interested in becoming a barrister. In London, he joined Lincoln’s Inn, one of the legal societies that prepared students for the bar. In 1895, at the age of 19, he was called to the bar." -- excerpt from Encyclopedia Britannica...

Dear k b r, Mangala Uru , Thank you for confirming what I said with quote from open literature. That passage is confirming that a compounder is calling himself doctor and that blatant deceit is part of our textbook. I know you do not like to read long passages, but recommend you to find out what it took Gandhi to be qualified barrister and if Jinnah went through the grind the same way. Reading makes you wise, long or short. Develop the habit for your own good regardless of the length of the passage.

Honestly we have been taught Bumkum in School. We meaning ourselves and our children. Some things far from truth like....... 1.Luke, only 2 or 3 people fought for Independence, rest were onlookers. 2.Only 4 or 5 went to jail and wrote letters to their kith and kin from there. 3.Some Chacha Bhatija and cousin stories and other yarn spinning episodes. Now during 75 th year of Independence at least, Azadi Ka Amrat Mahotsav, let some truth be brought out and taught. What experimenting with truth all the time? Let truth be told....Or it has ways of announcing itself.

According to you rape and pillage by inhouse people is ok. Do you know how many independent kingdoms existed in the subcontinent during those days and the wars each one fought for territory and riches? Again Akbar was a third generation ruler. His grandfather Babur came to India conquered territory, established his kingdom and settled here and yet you call Akbar outsider. These days you migrate to the West and you get citizenship after a few years and then you can even contest elections there and rule that country. In the US, once you migrate and settle there and if your son or daughter happens to be born there, he or she can even become the President and yet you call a third generation ruler an outsider.......... fantastic logic you happen to have.

Alexander was really great. He 'conquered' half of the world and did not demand 40% commission like you. ;) ;) ;). You are the joker of the century. Who is Hedgewar? Nobody ever heard even his name till this month. It is only Nagpur Graduates who portray Hedgewar kind of people who licked the feet of British. Please you better not speak about 'Patriotism'. Your patriotism is limited to 40%.
