Beltangady: Man booked for transporting rice meant for PDS

Beltangady, Jun 1: Police arrested a person in connection with transporting the rice meant for the Public Distribution System (PDS) without any documents.

It is gathered, on Thursday, June 2, on a tip-off, Beltangady tahsildar and food inspector, found 24 bags of rice in a truck KA 20 AA 7479 in Gerukatte of Kaliya village in Beltangady taluk in front of SV Traders.

When the officials examined the rice, they came to know that it is similar to the rice provided for the PDS for the month of May 2022. When inquired, Ramesh said that he had borrowed it from the shops of Kaliya villages.

Officials have seized 12 quintal rice packed in 24 plastic bags. It has been found that the rice is being sold in the open market. As there are no proper documents available, Ramesh and others were allegedly involved in the racket. The total cost of the rice is Rs 18,000 and the vehicle seized is worth Rs 12,00,000.

The police have booked a case under sec 3, 7 Essential Commodities Act 1955 and 34 of IPC.

The accused was produced to the court.
