10 Lakh Farmers in Karnataka to get Loans of Rs 10,000 each

Shimoga, Mar 6 (PTI) : Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa today said 10 lakh small and medium farmers in the state could avail loans of Rs 10,000 each starting from April 1.

The farmers, including 2.50 lakh from Scheduled Caste and 1 lakh from Scheduled Tribe category, will have to fill a application form with their photographs and land ownership records and submit it to the respective deputy commissioners before April, he said.

The government would deposit Rs 5,000 in the account of each applicant and the balance would be released after confirming the crops developed by farmers at their fields, he said.

"This initiative is targeted at enabling farmers strengthen their farming activities," Yeddyurappa said.

Expressing concern over depletion of groundwater table all over Karnataka, the chief minister said the government has decided to accord Rs five crore each to all Assembly constituencies to tackle the problem.

Officials have been directed to take steps to desilt all tanks to enable storage of sufficient waster in the rainy season to strengthen the groundwater table, he said.

@Peter, Bangalore your comment clearly indicates that you cannot digest the development works of Yeddy. Even i am not supporting the scams done by Yeddy, but Yeddy's BJP rule is definately better than congress. Atleast appreciate if yeddy does some good for us.

Good spirit. It must be given to the farmers only not to the domestic workers or Beedi workers. Interest rate is fixed at 6% at the time of application. It is to be reduced to 2% to those whose cultivation is good. and 1% to those whose cultivation is excellent. Those who utilize this money for some other purpose other than cultivation, this amount to be claimed with 6% interest and Rs.2000/-each as processing charges. I hope this plan of C.M. will work and result will be good. Jai Ho C.M.

The motive may be good but if the things are put to practice, workability of the scheme  looks remote.Because scheme is likely to be misused at all points till the amount reaches the needy since it is a government scheme.Babus at the government and local chota leaders will be up in arms to grab whatever is possible.Secondly end use of funds is also in doubtful we are prone to misuse of money with the present life style. What about the follow up action for getting second instalment.Again it is Babus time to loot.Does the scheme envisage taking care of alled activities ot agrculture.Dairy/poultry/piggery/goat raering activity should also may be considered in the scheme.Proper management of the despensation of credit alone will make the scheme meaningful.

It is good if that amount is getting to deserved people, in a right way, and right time. The government must release all the benefiters name and address so we can trust it is came into affect. Hope there won’t be any political threat to obtain it. Almost every day Mr. CM is giving many assurances but most of them only dreams.

Great gesture of initiative on the part of the Govt to encourage farmers with loans. This is a vivid indication on the part of the Govt to recognize the need to assist the farmers in order to enable them to survive in difficult times.

However, the Govt should always preserve the love and respect between the farmers and the owners of the farm. Some of the farmers sold their farm decades ago to some willing buyers who have made enough justice to the poor who sold their land with full consent.

It appears that those minority farmers can now legally take their farmland back as per the new law. That is a sad situation. Its very sad for the present owners to handover the developed land even with the crop return back to the minorities without any compensation. That destroys the love and confidence between the farmers and the land-owners. This could be a sad episode.

Going by the state of affairs in the country/state, the applicants may have to pay more than Rs. 5000 to be eligible to get the money deposited in their account.

Also it has to be seen, out of 10Lakhs, how many will be real farmers and how many will be created, to be farmers to pocket the money.

Secondly this Rs. 5,000/10,000 should be given to the farmers as gift from the Govt and not as loans.

In my opinion Rs. 5000/ which is less than a months salary of a domestic worker/helper, will NOT help the farmers in any positive manner.

It would be wise, instead of paying 10Lakh farmers Rs. 5000/1000, help those farmers in real need substantially.

This is really good idea but the interest rate is not mentioned. The important thing is officials concerned need be checked the amount goes to directly to farmers with out any bribe.Small farmers are vulnerable for bribe for any subsidy govt makes available.

Effective implimentation with out going intermediaries are also a challenge to govt.
