Udupi: Two injured after cooking gas cylinder explodes at house

Udupi, Jun 14: Two people were injured and furniture and other household items were gutted in fire after a cooking gas cylinder exploded at a house in Moodabettu near Kodavoor late night on Monday June 13.

The blast occurred in the house of Gopala. Window glasses and utensils in the kitchen were damaged in the incident. It is gathered that the cooking gas cylinder in the kitchen caught fire by oversight. Within seconds the cylinder got blast as well as the fire spread to the whole room. Those who were inside the house ran for safety.

Savithri and another person sustained minor injuries.

Locals and social worker Eshwar Malpe rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control.

    Very unfortunate incident. Luckily there were no casualties but only property damage. There may be several reasons for the cooking gas to explode in a house.

    Very low standard of safety followed in third world countries....in dubai gas cylinders are not allowed to be kept in kitchen be it at hotels or homes...to minimize any damage in case of blast...in some apartment buildings in mlore this system is introduced..gas cylinders are kept in basement at a secluded underground space to minimize damage....but 90 percent houses and apartments still following 100 year old system... moreover most of the cylinders are extremely bad in condition and they are not replaced....govt is busy finding shivlings.

    I have always observed this issue as most neglected by most households... We are literally staying close to a ticking time bomb if rubber hoses are not properly maintained and dilapidated stoves are not changed for long time... Due to difficult budgets common people tend to postpone crucial financial decisions... But this must get top priority... Also close knob on the cylinder before retiring to bed or moving out of house for long... If possible house the cylinder outside the kitchen... Same applies to restaurants...
