How politics reduced Tipu Sultan from a national hero to a controversial figure

By M K Ashoka

Bengaluru, Aug 27 (IANS): It is common in every household of south Karnataka to address their kids as Tipu Sultan till date. In Mysuru, the historical and cultural capital of Karnataka, Tipu Sultan is known to be a valiant king who faced the British with all his might.

Even though people from the Kodagu region had reservations over the massacre of Kodava community members by Tipu Sultan, the bitterness never spilled over to the streets. The situation is however, different today.

Unlike contemporary rulers, Tipu Sultan used modern weapons such as Mysorean rockets to pound the British army. The rocket technology was the basic inspiration for the discovery of the Bangalore Torpedo, which was used extensively in World War I and II.

Tipu Sultan also tried to forge an anti-British alliance with Napoleon Bonaparte. Historical evidence has etched a special place for Tipu Sultan in the history of the country's struggle for freedom against the British.

Matters took a political turn with the Congress government headed by Siddaramaiah deciding to celebrate Tipu Sultan's birth anniversary. The BJP, then in the opposition, had rallied against the decision and challenged the Congress that it will not allow the celebrations to take place.

The Tipu Jayanti, however, was celebrated with fervour across Karnataka. In Kodagu, it led to widespread violence and death of a BJP worker. The bitter debate started over Tipu Sultan as a tyrant, a religious fanatic who tried to convert all Hindus to Islam.

BJP leaders quoted the letters said to be written by Tipu Sultan describing how he captured and converted Hindus to Islam in the Malabar region of Kerala. Congress and progressive leaders gave examples of how Tipu Sultan contributed to temples and saved Sringeri Mutt from the onslaught of Marathas.

They even argued that the temple of Ranganatha Swamy, located close to the palace of Tipu Sultan, managed to survive. However, the BJP government came to power in 2019, then Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa declared that Tipu Jayanti would not be celebrated.

Pratap Simha, BJP Lok Sabha MP from Mysore-Kodagu, maintains Tipu Sultan is wrongly interpreted as the Tiger of Mysuru. "He never fought a war and died inside the fort. Tipu Sultan was indulged in religious conversion and treated Hindus with brutality."

He further states that Tipu Sultan is unnecessarily glorified by the so-called progressive writers and politicians as part of appeasement politics.

Minister for Education B.C. Nagesh has maintained that though the reference to Tipu Sultan as the 'Tiger of Mysore' is being taken off, the content on Tipu Sultan will continue to remain in school syllabus.

Nazia Kousar, author of yet-to-be-published 'Bharatada Huli Tipu Sultan' (Tiger of India Tipu Sultan) stated that Tipu Sultan's tolerance is reflected in his annual grants to no less than 156 temples, which included land deeds and jewellery.

"His army was largely composed of Shudras. When the famed Sringeri Mutt, established by Shankaracharya, was invaded by the Maratha army, he issued a firman to provide financial assistance for reinstallation of the holy idol and restoring the tradition of worship at the Mutt," she explained.

His donation to the famous Srikanteshwara temple at Nanjangud; the donation of 10,000 gold coins to complete temple work at Kanchi; settling the disputes between two sects of priests at the Melkote temple; and gifts to Lakshmikanta temple at Kalale are all well-known.

Interestingly, Srirangapatna, a temple town, remained his permanent capital till the end of his rule. He was also instrumental in constructing the first-ever church in Mysuru. Incidentally, well-known historian B.A. Saletore calls him "defender of Hindu Dharma", Nazia Kousar explains.

The allegation of forcible conversions has to be seen in the background of political exigencies -- either they were with the colonialists such as in the case of Christians of Dakshina Kannada, or were waging a protracted guerrilla war as in the case of Coorg.

Here, historians have distorted the facts by reducing political exigencies to the "communal ideology" of Tipu, she says.

After Ganesh festival, which is likely to create a crisis situation in the state in the backdrop of the row over Veer Savarkar, organisations are gearing up to celebrate Tipu Jayanti on November 20, challenging the ruling BJP government.

How can Tipu be called a national hero or freedom fighter? If Tipu fought against the British, Shivaji too fought against the Portuguese. Tipu, Hyder Ali, Aurangzeb, Shivaji, etc. lived in an era of kings, tyrants and autocrats when the concept of nationalism and patriotism did not exist. All fought against each other either to extend or to protect their dominion or for their own survival.

tipu sultan is one of the worst tyrant the country and history has seen. he made my forefathers, mothers, sisters and small kids including pregnant women to walk from mlore to mysore. many were pushed from top of gadayikallu for refusing to convert to islam. he cannot be called sultan but the worst kind of demon like aurangzeb. the only title that can be given to him is JALLAD...A man who kills pregnant women cannot be termed as man but hijda of the highest order.

There is no evidence to prove that DK Christians collided with or spied for the British. Konkani speaking Christians were third or fourth generation emigrants (from Goa) during Tipu’s reign. DK’s local administration was totally controlled by the Tuluvas. Konkani speaking people either owned small plots of land or worked as agricultural labourers or petty traders. Portuguese and British seemed same to those who fled Goa. How do you expect such category of illiterate people to collide or spy for the British. Massacre of Christians or Hindus were based on mere rumours.

"It is very common in every household of South Karnataka to address their kids as Tipu Sultan'' says the article. He is partially right and partially wrong. Households in Dakshina Karnataka, from Shirur to all the way in Calicut in Kerala, do not name their kids but their DOGS as ''TIPU''. Each one of us would have had at least one pet dog named Tipu in our families. This Hero of new age liberals not only massacred millions of Hindus, he destroyed 27 Churches, captured 60,000  Christians converted 30,000, killed thousands and emptied Mangalore of them (Source '' Maj Gen Thomas Munro-Impact of Christianity on Indian & Australian Societies).  "Annihilation of the infidels was a sacred duty of all true believers''.  The Hindus of Coorg suffered Brutal onslaught by Tipu Sultan.  '' No one was spared.  EVEN DEAD HINDUS WERE CONVERTED, even dead Hindus. This is written by Tipu himself. (Source-Selected Letters of Tipu Sultan). Descendants of Manadayam Iyengars of Melukote near Mysore do not celebrate Diwali till this date, do you know why? Tipu ordered 700 members of this community to be hanged in broad daylight on Diwali.  Such were Tipu's atrocities that he made the likes of Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot etc.  look like kindergarten kids.

Until the British Crown took over India as one of its colonies, whole of India as a nation-state was alien to the Indian experience. The French were the only major contender of the British. Tipu Sultan joined with the French and was engaged in constant battle to expand his empire in order to bring the “infidel land under the sword of Islam.” Therefore, to claim that Tipu fought against the British for India’s freedom ignores historical truths and defies logic. In fact, the opposite is true. Tipu’s various correspondence with the French, preserved at the India Office in London indicate how he conspired with them to drive out the British and divide India between them. If this was not enough, Tipu also invited the Afghan ruler, Zaman Shah to invade India and help the cause of Islam. No amount of whitewashing can clean the blood stains from this Tyrants hands. The man himself admits in his letter that he has killed millions and then we have liberals justifying this devil.

Tippu is coward, bigot ,and cruel butcher who killed innocent women and children, He aligned with French and Turkey who are also invaders and foreigners just to survive and and retain his power. He traded his own children to survive after defeat, He can become hero and freedom fighter only to the brainless people. Even British did not kill innocent people by their religion after they killed Tippu.

Wars within India always fought between rulers of different kingdoms within India. Thus, Indians were fighting Indians. Tippu fought against British not Christians and those who supported , spy for them or joined with British military he might have ordered to kill them. it not comes Tippu is an anti Christian eg, India fought against Pak and won two wars and thousands of soldiers of our enemies have been killed but no one is called India is anti Muslims. This is logic.

Absolute bs opinion & far from truth. Tippu was a coward ruthless Persian who converted a billion Hindus & Christians to Islam by force. He donated to Nanjangud & Sringeri temple after not being able to destroy them & realising existsnce of a power field there. He was such a coward that he lost multiple times to guerilla warfare of Kodava warriors finally inviting them for ceasefire lunch at Srirangapattana & poisoning their food. Such a Persian coward was painted as freedom fighter & inserted into history books by Cong.

He punished many Christians and some Hindus for co-operating with the Portuguese first and then with the British. He destroyed the churches built by the Portuguese and left intact the ones built by others.

Dear Rolf, Dubai, Your feeling of righteousness is justified. That is the power of propaganda if included in textbook logically bereft of historical fact and detail. Tipu fought British because, he believed in something even more grand. He even wrote to the then ruler of Afghanistan for help against imminent British attack and how it is attack against his grand design for Hind. And there is this sundry meaning of Katha, you do not have to bother. But his actions against British actually suited and served Congress historians many years after his death that Siddu saw political mileage in Tippu Jayanthi. Let us laugh out loud please...

Making Tipu the national hero by completely ignoring the atrocities is disgraceful in the first place. He is more celebrated in Pakistan than in India actually. Ask Siddu who was keen on Tippu Jayanthi, as to who politicized it. And our ignorance of Veer Savarkar was such that, Tipu was touted as the tit for tat. The political capital behind name of Gandhi leveraged for political reasons in independent India is seminal and unprecedented. And yes, if you want to drag anyone's name through the mud, ask any politician to use that name once - then on, it will be like watching a car accident and pile up thereof.

Why do you care about my support, to speak the fact that 75 years after British left , many millennials in Britain do not know even today that Britain colonized India several decades ago, let alone the brutal history of British colonization? If you have a historical reference of substance please share. Whether I support British or not is actually irrelevant today. Rishi Saunak wants to be PM of Britain, for Britain, by Britain and "from" Britain. But, the real question is, should Tipu be our national hero and not be politicized?
