Mangalore, Jun 25: The policemen of Urwa police station have at last succeeded in arresting the accused, who allegedly killed Anjana K C (23), assistant manager with Syndicate Bank, Katipalla branch, at his rented home at Kapikad Bejai in the city on April 18.
Anjana, a native of Kozhikode in Kerala, is said to have come into contact with the accused, who was working in a food joint in a shopping mall in Bejai, and the acquaintance soon developed into mutual love, it is said.
The arrest was made from near Udupi railway station on Monday June 24.
The accused arrested has been identified as Mahesh alias Santosh (35) from Gunade village in Khed taluk of Ratnagiri district, Maharashtra. The accused, who had given his name as Mahesh at a couple of places he worked in Mangalore, had never provided his employers his proper addres. This had created bottlenecks in police investigation.
Anjana, who lived in Syndicate Bank quarters in Gandhinagar here, was reportedly escorted by Mahesh to his home in Kapikad. He had killed her by tightening a rope around her neck. The owner of the house, who heard the victim’s groans at night, saw the lady in a critical condition on a chair, while Mahesh was not to be seen. She was admitted into a private hospital and then to Wenlock Hospital, as her identity could not be established. Anjana had died the next day.
Anjana’s mother had filed a missing complaint in Barke police station, as her daughter did not return home after leaving bank that day. It was learnt that she was not aware that her daughter was visiting Mahesh that day. As Anjana was found murdered in Kapikad the next day, the case was shifted to Urwa police station.
Mahesh had changed the sim of his cell phone after escaping from Mangalore, but not the set. He borrowed the sim of card of a friend for the purpose. This made the task of the policemen easier in locating his whereabouts.
It is learnt that Mahesh had also murdered another woman named Rajeshwari in Mulund, Maharasthra, in 2008, after falling in love with her. He was granted parole in the case after remaining behind bar for three years. Instead of going back to jail, he had jumped parole and gone missing by shifting base to Mangalore. In Mangalore, he initially worked for a bar near KSRTC bus stand. He later worked for 'Fish Monger' in Big Bazar here. He also worked in Poonja International Hotel and Bombay Sales, which deals in women’s wear, on Central Market Road.
Mahesh had come in contact with Anjana, who used to visit his outlet, when working in Fish Monger at Big Bazar. He also supplied fish to her home. Both of them had agreed to marry each other, but parents of Anjana did not approve this relationship. The parents were not prepared to give their daughter, a rank holder in MBA and working as assistant manager in a bank, to Mahesh, who was not educated, and did not have a permanent job. Anjana and Mahesh fought on this issue, as Anjaya was obedient to her parents, it is gathered. After Anjana told him that she required Rs 1,000 urgently, Mahesh invited her to his room on April 16 evening. Anjana, who went to his room at around 7.15 am, was found in a critical condition from his room at night. During his interrogation, Mahesh told the police that he was angered by the rejection of Anjana to his marriage proposal.
The police have learnt that Mahesh escaped to Gujarat after the murder, before travelling to Mumbai and Nepal. He returned to his hometown in Ratnagiri. Instead of going to his native place, he chose to stay with his niece, Anita, who lives in Kalapur in Raigarh district, for six weeks. There, he worked in a garments shop and earned Rs 10,000 per month.
Urwa police inspector, Ramachandra Maledevar led the operation. The accused was presented before the magistrate on Monday night.
