Kuwait: MAK holds national level volleyball, throwball tourney

Kuwait, Mar 1: Mogaveers Association Kuwait (MAK), affiliated to Indian embassy Kuwait, organised the second national level volleyball and throwball tournament under the title ‘MAK Champion Trophy 2018’ on February 25. The tournament was held at Qadisiya Sports Club, Hawally.

The tournament coincided with the national day of Kuwait. The weather was pleasant, the participants and MAK members were all geared up for the tournament.

The day long tournament commenced at 7.30 am with a grand opening ceremony. On behalf of MAK management committee, Poonam Mendon, the general secretary of MAK, welcomed all the distinguished guests, participating teams, MAK management committee, MAK members and all the sports enthusiasts.



The chief guest of the day was Nancy D’Souza, manager and coach of team Q8 Steel birds. She has been working in Kuwait Airways for 27 years and is coach and founder of team Q8 Steel Birds. She has been actively participating in all the matches in spite of her busy schedules and encourages the young players.

The guests of Honour for the day were Wilson D’Souza, president Tulkoota, Kuwait, Madhu Raveendran, manager, Boubyan Co and Roshan Quadras, former president of Pangala Association Kuwait. All the guests were presented with a floral bouquet as a mark of respect. This was followed by the national anthem of Kuwait and India. The guests conveyed their best wishes and good luck to the participating teams and organizers.

Ramesh Kidiyoor, president of MAK in his speech, welcomed the gathering and stressed the importance of playing with true sportsman spirit and conveyed his best wishes to all the participating teams.

The guest along with the president of MAK Ramesh Kidiyoor, inaugurated the tournament by cutting the ribbon and with symbolic play.

A total of seven volleyball teams and five throwball teams participated and fought for the coveted trophy and cash rewards.

Al Ghanim Security, Al Sayer Toyota, Boubyan Strikers, Kunjal Friends, KSAC-A, KSAC-B, and Nepal Team participated in the volleyball matches. STARZ, Blazing Warriors, Dragon Queens, Q8 Steel Birds, and IDAK participated in the throwball matches.

The volleyball first round match started between Team AL Ghanim Security and Boubyan Strikers and the first round of throw ball match was between Team Blazing Warriors and Team Dragon Queens. The teams played with full enthusiasm and viewers enjoyed and experienced the spectacular show. As the day progressed matches kept rolling one after another.

The sponsors of the event were Badar Al Samaa and Design Guru.

The referees for the day were Alexander Mathew and Suresh Yerumbu Shivappa.

The scorers for throwball matches were Geetha Suvarna and Nithin Suvarna.

The scorers for volleyball matches were Kishore Kotian and Rakshith Suvarna.

The announcements were made by Girish Mehta and Purandara Manchi.

Sumptuous breakfast, lunch and snacks were provided by Royalstar Caterers.

Winners

The volley ball tournament ended with a finale of Final matches between Team Al Sayer Toyota and Team Boubyan Strikers. After a tough battle between the two strong teams, Team Al Sayer Toyota bagged the winner’s trophy and Team Boubyan Strikers were declared the first runners-up. The second runners-up trophy was won by Al Ghanim Security. MAK ‘Player of the Tournament’ for volleyball was Rakesh Sekhar E of Team Al Sayer Toyota.

On the other hand, in throwball tournament, Team Dragon Queens defeated the opponents and grabbed the winner’s trophy. The 1st runners-up trophy was won by Team Blazing Warriors and Team Starz stood up as the 2nd runners-up. MAK ‘Player of the Tournament’ for throwball was Marliyn Pereira from Team Dragon Queens.

Prize distribution ceremony

Sathish Chandra Shetty, owner, Oriental International General Trading & Contracting Co, Sudhakar Shetty, Indian NRI in Kuwait, Elias Sanctis, Indian NRI in Kuwait, Raghu Poojary, president, Billava Sangha, Hussein Sulaiman Ali Haider Ali, assistant manager, Boubyan Strikers, Shan, owne, Design Guru graced the prize distribution ceremony. As a token of respect, all the guests were presented flower bouquets.

The guests along with MAK management committee awarded trophies and medals to winners, runners-up & individual achievers.

A raffle draw was conducted by MAK where the first prize was won by Ahana Vikyath, the second by Promod Kumar and the third by Ahana Vikyath.

Ten consolation prize winners were Santhosh, Peter, Prathana, Prashanth Boloor, Jathin, P K Raju, Ahana Vikyath, Shikha S Amin, Dinesh Salian and Briana D’Souza.

Poonam Mendon thanked each and everyone who were responsible for the success of the tournament including the participants, sponsors, organisers, MAK vounteers, MAK management committee and executive committee, in her vote of thanks.

Management and staff of Qadsiya Sports Club were thanked specially for the awesome venue.
