Mangaluru: St Aloysius PU student knocked down by speeding car, critical

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Mar 26: Nikitha Cutinha, a 16 year old II PUC student of St Aloysius College was knocked down by an over-speeding car driven by a woman opposite Derebail Church on Sunday March 25.

The car was driven by Sharmila, a resident of Bengaluru who owns an apartment at Bejai Kapikad in city.

Nikitha who is the daughter of Noreen Crasta, a senior staff nurse of AJ hospital and Jerome Cutinha who works in Saudi Arabia, was waiting for bus on the roadside when the tragic incident occurred.

The rash and negligent driving by the driver is said to be the reason behind the mishap. The driver drove to the extreme left of the road on to the pavement and injured Nikitha. She sustained major injury to her head including haemorrhage and severe bleeding.

She was immediately shifted to AJ hospital by a Good Samaritan and was operated upon by reputed neuro surgeons of the hospital. As of now she is in a very critical condition and doctors have reserved a period of 48 hours before giving further opinion on her chances of recovery.

What i heard from other people around is that the lady was a learning driver and was still practicing to be steady with her car. She mistook the brakes for accelerator and crashed into the girl. She herself took the girl to the hospital in her car but lost some time driving to the hospital as she was still a learner. Not sure why people practice on busy roads. They should understand that others lives are in danger if they cause accident and they would have to live with the guilt for any loss of life.

Nikita wishing you a speedy recovery.Daiji you are a big source of Information and can do a bit for educating the drivers of Mangalore. Year after year we see drivers do not respect and follow rules , everyone seems to be driving with highbeam lights on ,there by blinding the other drivers or people walking on roads at night. The police should stop such drivers with warnings and heavy fines to avoid and send them back to learning schools to educate and teach discipline.

I am grateful to the citizen who rescued this child to the hospital however golden hour is lost in a trauma if the accident victim is not provided immediate life support by first responders at the scene of the accident. Does this city not have ambulance services and first responder services? The local lawmakers who indulge in ribbon cutting ceremonies to inaugurate fancy airports, stadiums and such should make basic citizen needs a priority. Hind sight is 20/20, we can always learn from our unfortunate experiences.

It is really sad to know someone is suffering that too critically without one's own fault. As a precaution from this incident, we pedestrian walkers of Mangalore must choose a path to walk opposite to the movement of vehicles on the road, so that if there's a chance to escape from similar situations, could be safer. It is also important to have presence of mind in the out world environment, than being on cellular usage. However it is the fault of driver driving in wrong direction, we can bring back the situation and reverse it. There's lot more scope for road traffic management to improvise and implement effective system in Mangalore.

Another child has been felled down. As it is known here, driving is not a right, it is a privilege. Negligent and incompetent drivers such as the woman in this irresponsible driving should be taken off the streets and their driving privilege taken away. I am not sure what deterrents are in place for safe traffic in that city. Well-marked pedestrian crosses with signal lights, portable solar powered radar units to alert speeding drivers on the road side, steel or concrete barriers where pedestrians cross specially in school zones are helpful. These are small investments for the safety of our citizens, I hope the city will consider implementing safety measures immediately.

Very sad incident. The Lady who drove her car on this girl should be made accountable & she has to pay all the bills of the Hospital including severe punishment, also should pay to the girls family for their sufferings.
Hope this girl will recover soon.....

In the whole world, people give first preference to pedestrians including school going children crossing the road, people stop their vehicles, but in this country everyone is king who is riding, driving vehicles, they feel they have first preference over anyone including school children and age old people, use foul language to scold people even if he or she is educated, there is no value for human beings at all.

Because i saw a driver near car street very recently during some occasion, i asked the poor small kids (around 10) waiting to cross the road who were holding their hands one another waiting for many minutes to cross the road, but a rash driver tried to pass through them in the middle of the road without considering the small kids. It's my screams that stopped this stupid man and allowed the small kids to pass on to the other side.

This is the actual situation here. Those who ride vehicles feel like they are King, Queen.
