Sathya Sai Baba (85) No More - Funeral on Apr 27

Daijiworld Media Network

Puttaparthi, Apr 24: Godman Sathya Sai Baba, a cult like figure who attracted millions of followers, including the influential, across the globe died today after battling serious illness for nearly a month.

85-year-old Baba, whose clout ran far and wide but had more than his own share of controversies, died at 7:40 AM following multi-organ failure at the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences founded by him in this backward Anantapur district town in Andhra Pradesh, the place from where he ran his spiritual empire.

"Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba is no more with us physically. He left His earthly body on April 24 at 7:40 AM due to cardio-respiratory failure," Director A N Safaya, Director of the Institute, said.

"Baba's body will lie in state at Sai Kulwant Hall for two days -- Monday and Tuesday. Arrangements will be made for darshan after 6:00 pm today at the Hall," he said.

Baba will be buried at the Sai Kulwant Hall in Prashanti Nilayam on Wednesday in line with the practice adopted for spiritual leaders in India, contrary to the Hindu custom of cremating bodies.

State Major Industries Minister J Geetha Reddy said the members of Baba's family and the Sri Sathya Sai Central Trust have decided that his burial will take place on Wednesday morning. The exact time will be announced later.

Born as Sathyanarayana Raju in a humble backward caste family in 1926, Baba emerged as one of the most popular godmen in India in modern times. Initially he attracted attention through acts like producing articles like sacred ash and 'lingam' which his detractors claimed was a sleight of hand, but later he came to be known for his founding institutions of learning and philanthropy.

Baba, who considered himself a reincarnation of Sai Baba of Shirdi, was hospitalised on March 28 following problems related to heart and respiration and had been lying critical following multi-organ failure.

Surviving on ventilator support, his kidneys stopped functioning and his health suffered deterioration a few days ago when his liver also stopped functioning.

Police reinforcements were rushed to the town as VIPs started descending on it but it was not clear as to the mode of last rites for the Baba.

The Sai Baba leaves a big empire estimated from a conservative figure of Rs 40,000 crore to a staggering Rs 1.5 lakh crores raising questions over who will manage the Trust.

However, Reddy, who has been camping here for the past two weeks, said there is no controversy on the issue of trust activities.

Reddy said: "I have not seen any infighting. It is just media creation. The trust activities will go on as usual. The Sai Baba has put in place everything. He has taken care of everything. He knew when he will leave his body."

"Baba has put in place everything, the whole missionaries in-charge. All his activities will run as it is. We have no suspicion about any differences over running the trust," she said.

An array of personalities, including Vice President M Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress President Sonia Gandhi and BJP leaders L K Advani and Nitin Gadkari, condoled the Baba's death, saying he was a spiritual leader who inspired millions to lead a moral and meaningful life.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy and Governor E S L Narasimhan rushed here from Hyderabad and paid homage to the Baba.

Top-ranking politicians including prime ministers, Union ministers, governors, chief ministers, filmstars, sportspersons, industrialists and virtually the 'who's who' of the country rank among the high-profile devotees of the Baba.

Puttaparthi - which metamorphosed into a self-contained city - finds itself on the international map, thanks to the large number of the Baba's foreign devotees who visit Prasanthi Nilayam day in and day out. It boasts of an exclusive airport where chartered flights, carrying Baba's devotees from different parts of the globe, land.

Frequently, reports alleging scandals in his ashram appeared. Questions were also raised over his sexual preferences but they were dismissed by him and his followers as vilification by his detractors or those who had fallen out with him.

On June 6, 1993, an attempt was allegedly made on his life by his close aides. Six inmates of Prasanthi Nilayam were killed right inside the Baba's bedroom. All of them were part of the "inner circle" of Baba. His personal assistant Radha Krishna Menon was among those killed in the incident.

Facts of the case still remain a mystery.

ok...i sort of accept ur views, but i wud like to mention that Sai Baba of Shirdi had come to life after going out of his body...that is a special Sidhhi that he possessed, and since Satya Sai Baba is his next birth...im sure he will come alive again..these resurrection things are simple for him and other masters like him...
i respect ur words..for u r right in a way..but im saying that he is no ordinary person,he has all of the 8 major siddhis,so he actually has complete control of this universe

I am not a follower of Satya Sai Baba but I recollect his famous quote.
"Jesus sacrificed His life for the regeneration and welfare of mankind. Today, there are some who exaggerate the so-called differences between different faiths and, for their own selfish purposes, exploit these differences they thereby bring a bad name to the founders of those religions, who were spiritual giants. No Prophet or Messiah asked his followers to hate other religions or the followers of other faiths. Every religion has d that God is One and that the Divine dwells in every being. Jesus also proclaimed the truth that the One Spirit resides in all beings."
No wonder he died on Easter Sunday.

    25. Whatever acts, good or bad, man may do, the fruits of them follow him and will never stop pursuing him.

    26. Greed yields only sorrow contentment is best. There is no happiness greater than contentment.

    27. The tendency to make harm should be plucked out by the roots. If allowed to exist, it will undermine life itself.

    28. Bear with fortitude both loss and grief try to achieve joy and gain in the future.

    29. When you are invaded by anger, practice silence or repeat the name of the Lord. Do not remind yourself of things, which will inflame the anger more. That will do incalculable harm.

    30. From this moment, avoid all bad habits. Do not delay, do not postpone businesses for the future: it will not contribute the slightest benefit.

    31. Try as far as possible within your means to satisfy the needs of the poor, who really live in poverty. Share with them whatever food you have and make them happy at least that moment.

    32. Whatever you feel should not be done to you by others, avoid doing such things to others.

    33. For faults and sins committed in ignorance, repent sincerely try not to repeat the faults and sins again pray to God to bless you with the strength and the courage needed to stick to the right path.

    34. Do not allow anything to come near you, which will destroy your eagerness and enthusiasm for God. Lack of eagerness will cause the decay of the strength of man.

    35. Yield not to cowardice do not give up bliss.

    36. Do not swell with pride when people praise you do not feel dejected when people blame you.

    37. If among your friends one hates another and starts a quarrel, do not attempt to inflame them more and make them hate each other more try, on the other hand, with love and sympathy to restore their former friendship.

    38. Instead of searching for others’ faults, search for your own faults uproot them, throw them off. It is better to find one fault of yours than to find tens of hundreds of faults in others.

    CONT :
    13. You must also possess control over the indriyas, an unruffled character and non-attachment.

    14. Be always on the alert against the four sins, which the tongue is prone to commit: 1) speaking falsehood, 2) speaking ill of others, 3) backbiting, 4) talking too much. Man must control these impulses as much as he can.

    15. Try to prevent the five sins that the body commits: 1) killing, 2) adultery, 3) theft, 4) drinking intoxicants 5) the eating of flesh. Be as far away as possible from them, and this will be a great help for the highest life.

    16. One must be always vigilant, without a moment’s carelessness, against the eight sins that the mind perpetrates: 1) craving (kama), 2) anger, 3) greed, 4) attachment, 5) impatience, 6) hatred, 7) egoism, 8) pride.

    17. Man’s mind speeds fast, pursuing wrong actions. Without letting it hurry like that, remember the Lord and always try to do good for others. Those who do thus will certainly become fit for the Lord’s grace.

    18. First give up the evil tendency to feel envious at the prosperity of others and the desire to harm them. Be happy that others are happy. Sympathize with those who are in adversity and wish for their prosperity. That is the means of cultivating love to God.

    19. Patience is the strength which man needs.

    20. Those anxious to live in joy must always be doing good.

    21. It is easy to conquer anger through love, attachment through reasoning, falsehood through the truth, bad through good, and greed through charity.

    22. One should never give reply in swear words. Be at a great distance from them this is for your good. Break off all relations with people who use such words.

    23. Seek the company of good men, even at the sacrifice of your position and life. But be praying to God to bless you with the discrimination needed to distinguish between the good men and the bad. For this, you must endeavor with the intellect given to you.

    24. Those who conquer states and earn earthly fame are hailed as heroes but only those who have conquered the indriyas are heroes who must be acclaimed as the conquerors of the universe

Sathya Sai Baba gives us the precise, perfect, universal ethical Teaching :

    1. Prema, love, should be considered as the very breath of life.

    2. The love, (originally) manifested equally to all, is Divine.

    3. One God is present in every one, in the form of Prema.

    4. More than all other forms of Prema, man’s first effort should be to fix his love to the Lord.

    5. Such love directed toward God is bhakti it is the fundamental test and acquisition of man.

    6. Those who seek the bliss in the Atman should not run after the joys of sense objects.

    7. Sathya, the Truth, must be treated as life-giving, as breathing itself.

    8. Just as a body that has no breath is useless and begins to rot and stink, similarly, life without the Truth is useless and becomes the stinking abode of strife and grief.

    9. Believe that there is nothing greater than the Truth, nothing more precious, nothing sweeter and nothing more lasting.

    10. The Truth is the all-protecting God. There is no mightier Guardian than the Truth.

    11. The Lord who is Sathya grants His darshan (the possibility to contemplate Him) to those of truthful speech and loving heart.

    12. Keep undiminished kindness toward all beings and also the spirit of self-sacrifice

May his soul rest in peace. He suffered during lent days and breathed his last on "Easter Sunday". He really led a holy life, helping so many poor people. God has taken him to Heaven, great loss for the humanity. He has promised that he will be born again in 15days or so, I saw on TV news. That’s a great news.

Whatever we may think about him if he was incarnation of God, a semi-God , a Baba, just a human being, or just a fraud spiritual leader…let us not forget he gave solace, gave feeling of strength to people who felt lost and found no way to move ahead in their life. Unlike our shameless politicians he created schools, colleges, medical research institutions and hospitals where under privileged could get care at no cost or very low costs. He was definitely far better from politicians and other religious leaders, as he never preached discord during his life time. He had a charisma that he used for the betterment of the society.
May God rest his soul in peace. Let his good work, his contribution to the society guide us all (especially all our political and religious leaders) to live in peace with each other in times to come.

Condolences to the members of the world who hold Shri Sai Baba at extreme height. I hope his followers would maintain calm through their mourning for this great loss and while bidding him last good-bye.

Predictions have been that next incarnation of this great personality would be from Karnataka. We humans never give up hope.
