BJP Smells Bigger Scam in Air India, Demands Reply from PM

New Delhi, May 1 (PTI): Suspecting a ''bigger scam'' in Air India operations, BJP today demanded that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh pin responsibility for the alleged mismanagement in the running of the national carrier.

Pointing out that Air India losses have mounted after the merger of the domestic and international airliners, BJP spokesman Rajiv Pratap Rudy wondered whether the present state of affairs in the airlines was a ploy to shut it down.

Rudy wondered whether the government was trying to cover up a bigger scam in Air India by targeting pilots.

He said the airlines had on earlier ocassions blamed the global financial crisis, rise in fuel prices and increasing competition for the its mounting losses.

"We have now heard the government and the present management blaming pilots for its losses," he said here.

"The Prime Minister must be frank enough to find out and tell the nation as to who is responsible for all this," Rudy, a former civil aviation minister, said.

He claimed that pilots belonging to Indian Airlines were under-utilised in the merged entity -- NACIL -- and any government decision to declare a shutdown would only help meet the demand of pilots required by the private airlines.

Rudy said he had reasons to believe the PMO was deeply involved in running the airline and wanted to know as to who was responsible for the merger of Air India and Indian Airlines and its subsequent failure.

He said over the years Air India had developed several profitable routes which were handed over to private airlines, an action which has led to drop in revenues.

Rudy said the national carrier was not fully utilising the aircraft it has at its disposal. He said Air India, which has the largest fleet in the country, operates an aircraft for about eight hours every day where as private airlines operate an aircraft for nearly 16 hours every day.

He claimed the Boeing 777 aircraft acquired by Air India were kept in the bays for four months causing enormous loss to the state exchequer.

"Is it a well-planned conspiracy to shut down the airline or does the government want to privatise Air India," he asked.

He said the government had time and again made efforts to bail out Air India but such attempts have not been fruitful.

"What happened to the Rs 2000 crore given by the exchequer to Air India," he asked.

Rudy also attacked Civil Aviation Minister Vayalar Ravi for dubbing pilots as a "bunch of 12th pass" persons who were demanding more money.

"Former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was also a pilot. Is Ravi also referring to him as a 12th pass person," he wondered.

Rudy said he expected Congress President Sonia Gandhi to respond to Ravi's remarks.

When Socialism is more important than profitablity for Govt., controlled industries where accountability is never implemented or heard of.
The day Tata was divested the airline he started in the name of nationalisation the rot has set in.
Now govt., needs to hand it over in open bidding all the assets & control of this White Elephant which is eating more of tax-payers money to sustain its operations-where more pilots-75 are getting paid & get all the facilities of 5 star hotel stay without doing anything & still we have foreign recruits who donot understand English are taken as pilots-we can see why the airline is suffering.
It's time not to do any postmoretem which guzzels more time & wastes more money rather than see the alternative which stops this bleeding air carrier from imploding with reckless staff & mangaement indulging in one up manship(brinkmanship).

When the government of India is
going learn that running a business is the responsibility of
the private sector? It can be a
    corporation or an individual.

VINCY, Bangkonk: I do agree with
you 101% that AI must be handed
    over to corporations like Jet
    Airways or any other company.
But, there is a danger in taking
over AI. Jet Airways and other
    airlines hired new employees, but
is it possible to buy AI without
    its employees? AI employees
    are totally addicted to strikes
for x or y reasons, and they act
like India government civil service employees.

That attitude will not work in
    an airline industry of cutthroat
    competition. So, the buyer will
    be forced to bankruptcy at
    the earliest.

The irresponsible employees (majority of them) of
AI were not friendly with the
    passengers for a long time.
The passengers in AI are only
those people who didn't get a
ticket in any other airlines, or
    for the lowest price available.
Even for half price, I will not
fly AI because of the many bad
experiences I had with AI years
    back. The service might have
    improved, but the bitter memories
    can't be forgotten besides, there
    are several good and friendly
    airlines flying to India.

These are very good questions. I think it is time to shut down Air India and let the private airlines handle the traffic. They are a shame to our country anyway. Even in Switzerland where Swissair was the crown jewel and was the best airline in the world they shut it down once they started making losses due to mismanagement due to self-confidence and arrogance.

Only person responsible for current state of AI is PRAFUL PATEL. during his tenure as minister he gave only UNDUE advantage to all private airlines and raped apart AI, he did absolutely nothing for betterment of AI. and when he got a sense of bad times he silently moved to other ministry.Instead of AirIndia it should be in three parts, politicalIndia, prafulIndia,pilotindia...not for publicindia ... Congress days are numbered, the public has finally woken up!!
