Mangalore: Why Do Coastal Districts Lag Behind in SSLC?

Mangalore: Why Do Coastal Districts Lag Behind in SSLC?

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, May 13: Dakshina Kannada district, hailed to be the ‘district of intelligent people’ has slipped to a lowly 21st position in the state, as far as SSLC results of this year are concerned. The lackadaisical performance of the district, which is held in high esteem by other districts from which students flock here for better education, has baffled many educationists over years. Even in terms of quality of education, sincerity of teachers and facilities at schools, the coastal districts are rated high.

The district has slipped 13 notches to 21st place as compared to last year in SSLC results. This is in spite of the fact that its SSLC performance has improved this year from 72.85 to 78.30 percent registered last year, a clear indication that other districts have improved their performances by leaps and bounds. If we compare this to the result in 2004, when Dakshina Kannada district, with a pass percentage of 77.4 percent, was placed second behind Udupi, and had secured an honourable third spot in 2005, the slip is phenomenal. Although the ranking of the district has seen a roller coaster ride over the past some years, its slump this year behind many north Karnataka districts like Koppal, is unimaginable.

Udupi district, which had stood first in the state two years ago and fourth, last year, has gone down to the sixth position this year. The district has topped the state in PUC result, but the question is, why has the same performance not repeated in SSLC?

The teachers from the coastal belt, who are deputed for valuation work, have often found that students of many districts are allowed to copy their answers en masse. This is evident from the fact that almost all the answer sheets from specific centres bear the same answers and same mistakes. Copying can by far, improve the results of the districts, if not succeed in getting ranks for the students. Coastal districts have always been known for strict discipline and following of laid down procedures, where students are never allowed to copy answers or engage in other malpractices. In Pre University examination, mass copying has been rendered very difficult because of inherent systems. Naturally therefore, the coastal districts have shared the top two spots in PUC.

If the teachers put in more efforts to concentrate on the students who lag behind in studies, and if the school managements take steps to aim at 100 percent result, it may not be impossible for them to ensure that these districts go up the ladder again and be at the top. This is a daunting task, but the coastal schools can do it, and show that real education, and not mass copying, wins hands down at the end.

There are so many reasons for the declined position. But still I feel our students top in higher education. Mass copying may give u better results, but will never help the students in real life. It's better leave the teachers to work according to their plans. Unnecessory competitions between districts may push even our schools towards dirty exam habbits.

Agreed with your comments Mr Shivanand Shetty, Mangalore/Bangalore/USA. I also agree with your comments Mr Peter, Bangalore. One of my friend is a school teacher in Bantwal. Last time when i asked him about the lagging behind of our district in the SSLC results even he was of opinion that most of the students are not comfortable with answering objective type questions. He also said that most of the objective type question is too tricky and it is difficult to choose answers from the options. It's not like answering one sentence, two sentence, five sentence or ten sentence answers. So what i feel is that SSLC students should be trained more on answering those objective type questions so that our districts can bag it's previous first or second position in the SSLC examination results also.

Rahul M C, Mangalore agreed that mass copying is reported in other parts of the state, but we cannot give that as an exception for our districts failure in SSLC examination result. If you look into the SSLC results our neighbouring udupi district has bagged 6th position whereas DK district in 21 position. We have to think about that also right? Also think that in PUC exams our both Udupi and DK districts always bag first or second place in the state, but in SSLC we are behind. I agree that mass copying was allowed in some of the northern districts of our state, but those type of mass copying can also take place during PUC examination also right, but still our district performing well in PUC examination.

I agree with Dev's comments. Except in the coastal districts, in most other places mass copying in resorted to not only in SSLC and PUC but all other exams! The quality of students passing out is very poor despite them having scored high marks!

But one fact to be noted is as Mangalore gets developed it is getting exposed to the metro culture and more and more students spend time in the malls and pubs with their hitech mobiles, I Pods, etc. etc. Even the overall knowledge level is deteriorating. This is the heavy price we have to pay for the so called development......

iam also thinking why our mangalore is lagging, behind of SSLC result. it is a serious matter to think. here teaching is good, hardworking student , but no copying that may be the reason to got 21st place.

The declining standard of education is a concern for our DK.Like in all fields, a tendency of 'chaltha hai' has creeped in the minds of young faculty after the retirement humble and dedicated teachers who served with utmost dedication. Now, as far as ranking among districts is concrened, I am wondering what would be the ranking of districts if mutliple choice questions are ignored. More importantly,as you rightly pointed out, the ranking in SSLC and PUC is totally different. Just wait 2 years and see the PUC raking of this SSLC batch

more onus on both teachers and the students to bring back the no 1 position. This is something unbelievable and shocking. This is really a poor performance and should not be neglected.

The only reason for this is.The other dist students are allowed to copy. The teachers themselves encourage such things. But, in our districts its strictly not allowed.
Now,coming to the quality of education, the students of other districts(except for bang and mysore) cant even frame a sentence in English, they either mug up or copy.

The teachers of Dk & udupi district are much more dedicated n sincere in their work then the teachers in other districts. our teachers see that the students get the quality education n also teaches us good qualities to lead a good life.
when we compare the general knowledge of a dk & udupi student n other dist students are far behind. but the marks they score in exams will be always high.
friend of mine from hassan told me teachers let them do mass cheating in sslc as well as in pu board exams n also practical exams.
proper measures should be taken to check this aleast in the future n let the quality of education be high in karnataka

while it is almost impossible to have a 100% result district wise, efforts should be made to have more application based learning. the increase in pass percentage in the district is good.
