Bangalore: Anna Hazare Threatens Fast-unto-death if Lokpal Bill Scuttled

Bangalore, May 27: Anti-graft crusader Anna Hazare, who awakened the conscience of India with his agitation against corruption and forced the Congress-led UPA regime to promise introduction of the Jan Lokpal Bill by August 15, has threatened to go on a fast-unto-death if the Centre did anything to scuttle the move.

''If the Jan Lokpal bill becomes a law, it will eradicate 60 to 70 per cent of corruption," he said before entering the city on a two-day public awareness campaign.

Anna Hazare, who addressed villagers who had assembled to receive him at Begur village in Bangalore rural district, said the proposed Lokpal Bill will lay the foundation and basic framework for total eradication of corruption.

Having undertaken an indefinite fast in Delhi’s Janatar Mantar grounds to press for anti-graft legislation last month, which received widespread support from a large cross-section of the public, Anna Hazare asked the villagers to be ready for a nationwide protest if Lokpal bill was not implemented.

The campaign against corruption, he said was like administering ''first aid if one gets hurt" and would be successful with the active support of the people.

It was necessary that right values were inculcated from childhood and this can be done most effectively by the womenfolk, he said.

Pointing out that he tried his best to realise the dream of Mahatma Gandhi for eradication of corruption and ensuring rural development by establishing a model village in his home state of Maharashtra, he said: ''My village had 40 places where arrack was manufactured 13 years ago, has none now. Nobody smokes or even partakes gutka in my village,’’ he said.

Despite leading a spartan life ''with no bank balance," the ex-Army man said he was healthy and very happy. ''How many crorepatis are blessed with such good fortune?," he asked .

''I live in a temple, have just a bed to sleep and a plate to eat. But I am very happy and content," he said adding: ''At the age of 76, I am agile and healthy as I have no vices."

Anna has indeed opened the eyes and ears of the people. Anna means older brother and this older brother has the courage to threaten the leaders who are immersed in corruption. If the Bill is not passed Anna will go on an indefinite fast unto to death. Let the leaders not lead Anna into doing this. If anything happens to Anna it will have serious repercussions. There will be more ANNAS in the making to pursue the concepts Anna stands for. It is said that if the bill goes through 70% to 80% of corruption will be wiped of.This disease is deeply rooted in the minds and hearts of people and if the gandian principals are followed by all people parties there will be a different India. PEACEFUL AND PROSPEROUS. Everyone will be happy.

Hope The Government and all the parties in India follow the principals as prescribed by The Father of The Nation - MAHATMA GANDHI.

    Dear Anna Hazare,

Your selfless devotion to the country has moved over a billion people onto your side in the crusade against corruption. You are like the Mahatma Gandhi of the 21st Century. While Mahatma Gandhi fought for the independence from Britain, you have fought for independence against corruption. Oh, I salute thee! Jai Hind, Jai Anna Hazare!

As a foreigner I have been watching the development and the initiative to eradicate corruption in India.
Anna Hazare has threatened to go on a fast-unto-death if the Centre did anything to scuttle the move.
I am sure the Jan Lokpal bill will become a law and by implementing and applying it corruption can be reduced drastically in India.
Anna Hazare is receiving widespread support from a large cross-section of the public across India and therefore the centre will not dare to do anything to block the move.
The Lokpal Bill will lay the foundation and basic framework for total eradication of corruption.
To achieve this aim more support is necessary and it will be a big success to reduce corruption in the near future.
Anna is a true follower of Gandhi.
He commenced an indefinite fast in Delhi’s Janatar Mantar grounds to press for anti-graft legislation and got support from people of all walks of life.
His actions are peaceful and lots of Indians realised that Anna was determined to die for universal values, for a state free of corruption, with equal chances and opportunities even for the poorest of the poor.
His determination and support given by Indians forced the government to give in.
Anna is leading a spartan life and he says "'I live in a temple, have just a bed to sleep and a plate to eat. But I am very happy and content".
He convinces people and he should be taken as an example. Indians can be proud of Anna Hazare.

Rather than threatening and, then, actually going on an indefinite hunger strike to achieve an effective Lokpal Bill, Anna Hazare should establish centers in every state, tour and keep mobilizing people and assemble large demonstrations in every State on a particular day..

Corrupt politicians and businessmen couldn’t care less, if he dies during a hunger strike. So, he should give up the idea of going for hunger-strike again.

Anna Hazare is worth more alive than dead by a hunger-strike.

Yes, Anna really awakened the conscience of India. Now that he is coming to Bangalore, I strongly hope that he will bring some sense into Yeddy and other politicians of Karnataka. If ever God forbid he is forced to launch the agitation again, I wish he does so from Bangalore. But honestly I hope he is not forced to do that!
