New Delhi, Aug 27: HistoryTV18 is set to premiere “World War II With Tom Hanks”, a 20-part documentary series, on September 1 at 9 pm, coinciding with the anniversary of the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939.
Presented and narrated by two-time Academy Award-winning actor Tom Hanks, the History Original revisits the Second World War through a contemporary perspective, combining rarely seen archival footage, historical insights and personal accounts.
Spanning 20 one-hour episodes, the series traces the conflict from Germany's invasion of Poland to the fall of the Axis powers and the beginning of the atomic age. It explores major battles on land, sea and air, including Stalingrad, Normandy, the Atlantic and Pacific campaigns.
The documentary also examines the human cost of the war, including the Holocaust, civilian resistance and life on the home front. It highlights the roles of key wartime leaders such as Winston Churchill, Franklin D Roosevelt, Dwight D Eisenhower, Joseph Stalin, Erwin Rommel, Hideki Tojo and Adolf Hitler.
Beyond the battlefield, the series delves into espionage, code-breaking and industrial mobilisation that influenced the outcome of the conflict, while bringing forward the experiences of soldiers and civilians across different continents.
The series is executive produced by Tom Hanks, Gary Goetzman and Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Jon Meacham, among others.
Following the premiere on September 1, new episodes will be telecast every Monday and Tuesday at 9 pm exclusively on HistoryTV18.
