New Delhi, Jun 6 (IANS): India's top car maker Maruti Suzuki Sunday said that it has joined the "green league" of companies by registering for the clean development mission (CDM) project with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to bring down carbon dioxide emissions.

"Maruti Suzuki joins the elite -- green league -- of companies and nations who have in recent years pledged to undertake specific projects to bring down CO2 emissions in their operations," the company said in a statement.

"Besides identifying specific projects and committing resources, it will also help generate carbon credits for the company," it added.

With this, Maruti Suzuki claims to have becomes the first automobile company in the country to have committed itself to the United Nation's CDM project.

"This initiative will further sharpen our focus and increase our responsibility towards the environment. We will continue to focus on bringing environment friendly products using technologies and processes that conserve nature," said Shinzo Nakanishi, managing director and chief executive officer, Maruti Suzuki.

The company also urges its business partners to adopt environment caring practices and conserve nature, through structured training programs.
