Mangaluru, Mar 9: The quantity of dry red chilly that used to arrive into the city has reduced considerably. Due to this there is a short supply of dry chilly in the city wholesale market and the price is rising.

Everyday 2000 to 2500 bags of red dry chilli used to arrive from Byadagi in Ballari. However, on Thursday only 1000 bags were supplied. On Wednesday also the number of bags were less. Traders are saying that the price will increase considerably due to short supply.

In the auction that took place on Monday, rate of dry red chilly jumped up to Rs 450 from Rs 320 per kilo in the wholesale market. Though the crop is good this year, the farmers have not yet supplied the same to the market. The new crop is expected to arrive in the market in a week or two.

Some say that the traders are keeping the new dry chilli in air conditioned godowns and creating artificial shortages in the market in order to increase the prices.
