Irregular drinking water supply in elevated areas of Mangaluru city

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Mar 11: Though there is enough water in Thumbe dam, many wards of the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) are facing scarcity of drinking water.

Water is not supplied to elevated areas of the city. In some wards, even tankers are not sent. In some wards, drainage water has got mixed with well water. Areas like Bendorewell, Maryhill and Bunder are not getting corporation supplied pipe water.

The situation at elevated area of Panjimogaru ward is worse. Water is not supplied to Vidyanagara and Urundadi. As the pump suffers breakdown often, the residents are facing problems. Locals say that it takes four to five days to repair pump if it breaks down.

Residents of Vamanjoor, Pacchanady and Tiruvail are getting water once in two days for an hour. As the sewage water of Pacchanady dumping yard has entered wells, the well water is not potable.

Many apartment complexes in the city are also facing issues of water. Several are buying private tank water from their own funds. In Pandeshwar and Maryhill areas, seven to eight tankers of water is supplied every week.

Katipalla, Krishnapura, Surathkal and Kana residents too are facing acute shortage of drinking water. Electricity issues, tank leakage and pipe bursting are the reasons for the woes of the residents of these areas.

Water is not supplied to elevated areas of Kannur, Bunder, Marakada, Kulai, Baikampady, Kunjathbail, Kadri Padavu, Mannagudda, Derebail, Boloor, Kankanady, Shivbagh and Jeppu areas.

Mayor Jayanand Anchan says, “Instructions are given to officials to provide drinking water through tankers to areas where there is shortage of drinking water. At present, we have stock of 45 days of water in Thumbe dam. Water is being released from AMR dam to maintain the level.”

We have been facing similar issues as well here in Udupi. It has been almost 3 weeks and there is no solution at sight. No concrete steps are being taken by the concerned departments. We just get to hear excuses that we live in elevated areas. Not even tankers are being arranged to ensure drinking water to the houses. Basically, we are on our own.
