Mangalore: Human Rights Cell - 2011-12 Inaugurated at St Agnes College

Mangalore, June 25: Human Rights Education Cell for 2011-12 was inaugurated at Avila Hall of St Agnes College on Saturday June 25.
Police commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh, the chief guest on the occasion inaugurated the cell by lighting the lamp.
Presiding over the programme, Dr Sr Prem D’Souza, principal of the college said that last year two proposals were made by the co-ordinator of the cell with the Univesity Grants Commission to conduct national seminar and commence human rights certificate course in the college. The proposal was accepted by the UGC and the required fund also has been released. Hence the seminar and commencement of certificate course will be taken up the academic year.
She called upon every student to enrol for the cause of understanding more about the concept of human rights through the cell that will continue functioning for another four years. Various programmes like peace marches for redressal of grievances through the cell will throw light among fellow citizens, she added.
Later at a interactive meet held with the students, police commissioner said that role of society in safeguarding the human rights is utmost important. He stressed that mere police department should not be held responsible when the topic of ‘human rights’ comes in, rather layman too is equally responsible for achieving human rights in the society.
Human right under the pretext of Democracy refers to attainment of socio-economic fulfillment of the individuals, he said. He elaborated even ‘begging’ is the violation or exploitation of human rights. Through whistleblower system in recent years, the case of human right violation is reduced, he noted.
To a query, Singh said that if students come across any drivers and bus conductors misbehaving, one can complaint verbally by dialling 100.
