Udupi, Jun 29: Concluding that charge of rape levelled against the accused has been proved, the district and sessions court here sentenced the rape-accused to seven years of rigorous imprisonment. District and sessions judge, Narendra Kumar B Gunaki, pronounced this judgment on Tuesday June 28, after concluding that the guilt of the accused has been proved.

Bharat (23), resident of Manchi Pragatinagar near Manipal, had been accused of inviting a girl to a secluded house in the region, by lying to her that he had some secret information to share with her. Once they reached the compound of a locked house nearby, she was raped by him. He promised to marry the girl, but reneged on his promise. The lady gave birth to a child later because of this incident.

The mother of the girl in question adduced evidence in the case. The DNA test also proved the involvement of the accused in the rape, observed the judge, while sentencing the accused to seven years of rigorous imprisonment for rape, and another year for other minor offences.

The then inspector of Manipal police station, T Sanjeev Naik, and present inspector, H D Kulkari, were involved with the investigation. Public prosecutor, T S Jituri, appeared on behalf of the prosecution.
