Bangalore, Jul 4: In a fit of rage over an argument , Shanthakumar (65) slammed his wife Prathima's (56) head against a wall following which he committed suicide in their residence in Basaveshwaranagar late on Saturday July 2.

Seeing his wife collapse to the floor bleeding profusely , Shanthakumar hanged himself to death from the ceiling fan with a sari fearing that he had killled her.

The incident came to light when their housemaid Kaveri arrived early on Sunday July 3 to do her chores. A curious Kaveri peeped into the house through a window only to see Shanthakumar's body hanging from the ceiling. She immediately informed the couple's son Rakshith who stays on the floor above his parents'.

When Rakshith found his mother in a pool of blood, she was still breathing. He informed the police on his way to the hospital. She was rushed to  NIMHANS where her condition is said to be critical.

Prathima runs a beauty parlour in Rajaji Nagar. She was scheduled to leave to Los Angeles as her elder daughter who is residing there is pregnant.

The couple's son Rakshith is a freelancing photographer who has moved to the first floor of the same building.

Sources reveal that the deceased had served in Bangalore university for over four decades. He was allegedly addicted to gambling and was neck deep in debt. His gambling habits used to result in regular fights between the couple.

Police sources said that Prathima had filed a harassment complaint against her husband following one such fight.

When Prathima did not approve of his move to sell their house to sort out his gambling debts, he allegedly slammed her head to a wall in a fit of rage.
