Bantwal, Jul 8: “The unscientific construction of the barrier wall at Anekallu dam in Karopady village by the Kerala government led to itscollapse which caused floods in farmlands along the Karnataka border,” opined Dakshina Kannada DC Chennappa Gowda.

Addressing media persons here on Wednesday July 6, after viewing the damage caused by collapse of breakwater wall, Gowda said that the Kerala state administration had taken a hurried decision to construct the dam without taking the permission from interstate water resources department.  “From the overall point of view it’s clear that technical errors in execution of work and substandard quality led to the collapse of the barrier wall,” he added.

“The agriculturists on the ¬¬Karnataka border suffered a huge loss to their plantations and crops when the barrier wall collapsed a few days ago.  The dam was constructed by Varkady gram panchayat under the Kerala state administration.  It’s the responsibility of Kerala state to award compensation for the losses of agriculturists,” said DC Chennappa.  He also assured the agriculturists that talks will be held with officers of the concerned departments in both states when awarding compensation. Meanwhile, the plantation department officers surveyed the losses on the agricultural property and arrived at the estimated losses.

DC’s secretary Sudhakar, minor irrigation department chief engineer C N Venkatesh, deputy engineer Gopal Gowda, assistant engineer Mohammed Hanif, taluk plantation assistant director Sanjeev Naik, deputy Tahsildar Sridar Gowda, revenue inspector Govind Naik, Karopady gram panchayat vice president Jaleel Karopady, village accountant Ranjit, and panchayat development officer Vijayashankar Alva were present on the occasion.
