Puttur, Jul 9: In an incident that occurred past midnight on Thursday July 7 at Urumalu in Chikkamudnoor village in the taluk, a man killed his wife by hitting her with an iron rod, having been driven mad by doubts over her character.

Rumani (55), a labourer by profession, murdered his wife, Gulabi (38), in this fashion. Rumani was later arrested by the police from his residence. It is learnt that Rumani had been nurturing perpetual suspicion on the loyalty of his wife towards him since some years. He used to quarrel with his wife often on this issue, it is learnt.

Rumani stayed awake, although other members of the family slipped into deep sleep after dinner on Thursday, as he was waiting to execute his plan. After midnight, he got up, and hit the head of his wife with an iron rod. Gulabi died on the spot, but other family members were not alerted as there was no noticeable sound.  Rumani went to sleep as usual, and till the next morning, no one knew that one of the family members had been killed.

The next day, Rumani behaved as if nothing had happened. His daughter, Yashoda, informed the police about the murder, after which the police came to the place and arrested the culprit.
