Bangalore: Common Entrance Test for PU Colleges from Next Year

Daijiworld Media Network – Bangalore (SP)

Bangalore, Jul 12: The department of pre university (PU) education has decided to  introduce the system of conducting common entrance test for admission into PU colleges across the state. The system is proposed to be brought into force with effect from next year, although there is stiff opposition for this move from the managements of private colleges.

The department proposes to spare the students of the need to visit various colleges, collect application forms and booklets by paying hefty amounts, and then apply for seats. The entrance test will avoid this exercise, and provide a forum in which the students will be able to choose the colleges and courses they want on the basis of their merit, in a transparent manner, the government says.

The system will run on the concept of single window. All the students need to do is to download application forms from the website of the department, mention the choice of 30 colleges in order of preference, and the subject combination they want. These will be pooled together, and eligibility list will be prepared by utilizing all the seats available in government colleges and 50 percent in aided colleges. All the students will be governed by a uniform fee schedule, and the colleges will be barred from distributing application forms and booklets separately.

It is learnt that the department is in the process of drafting rules, regulations and procedures for this test. The students desirous of getting admission into PU colleges will be given admission in government and aided PU colleges in the state, on the basis of a list based on the marks scored by the candidates concerned in SSLC examination. The government also wants to utilize the services of Bangalore One and Karnataka One centres for accepting applications from students.

There we go! another portal for corruption, court cases and delays. Instead, the government should allot seats based on SSLC marks only. It should be like pre-paid taxis, wherin the fee is paid to the government via credit card or banks. There should absolutely be no money transaction between the college and candidate. This will avoid capitation fees. If the fee structure is uniform, then the merit becomes the sole criteria for seat allocation. There should not be any consideration for things like religion, caste. If at all, the governemnt should consider scolarship for candidates from poor background and exceptional merit.

Please see that rules are drafted in such a way that the process does not cause undue hardships on students & parents. Also, the rules & procedures should not give rise to new types of corrupt practices by either the College management or any one. I think in Kerala it is not common entrance test but the respective colleges are conducting entrance test.

Good move by the PU dept, but they should give the forms free of charge at the high schools and the fee should be nominal. They should educate the 10th grade about this system so the financially poor need not find a private agency to fill up the form and submit it.They should conduct this tests in november or december so that the students do not carry the stress where to apply after PU exams.

The new system(CET) for PUC students has it's own pros and cons.Unlike CET for Eng/Docs are limited to those who has resources and those who are in merit but for PUC most of the students who completes SSLC want to make PUC.Here the the con is that if all students pooled then he or she able to get his favorite or local colleges?Only time will tell the outcome. However this system already introduced in Kerala and our Keralite friend's children are facing above said problem.
