Mangalore: Auto Rickshaw Drivers Demand 40 Percent Hike in Fares

Mangalore, Jul 12:
Auto rickshaw drivers belonging to as many as seven unions on Tuesday July 12 demanded a 40 percent hike in the auto fare in a unique protest that saw them taking their autos from Hampankatta to the deputy commissioner's office without starting their engines.

DK district auto rickshaw drivers unions’ coordination committee, DK district auto rickshaw drivers’ union, Janatha auto rickshaw and vehicle drivers’ union (HMS), Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (rickshaw unit), Surathkal auto rickshaw drivers’ owners’ union, minority auto rickshaw drivers’ owners’ union and park committee took part in the protest.

The auto drivers said that the last hike in fare was when the petrol price was Rs 50 per litre. Now it has reached Rs 70 per litre. Annual insurance price which was Rs 2,000 has now  risen to Rs 3,000. The price of spare parts and tyres have increased by one-and-half fold, and repair costs at garages have also increased. LPG cylinder price has also increased by 40 percent. Thus it is impossible to run the auto rickshaws at present meter rate, they reasoned.

They were also furious with the Mangalore City Corporation for repairing only 100 km of the over 500 km of road which comes under its limits. The rest of the roads are in pathetic state. Interior roads within the city have not been developed from many years, thereby making the maintenance cost a big expenditure, they said. Hence, a revision of the auto fare was inevitable, they stressed.

The unions submitted an appeal to the DC addressed to the state government listing their demands. They also demanded the state government to provide five litres of petrol or LPG each day on subsidy basis as given to fisherman.

Carry on with the hike....!!!! No issues..BUT
1)what is the point in the hike..the meter is an utter waste.they charge us with random rates which kms to their mind.
2)if asked to go inside any lane in daylight-we are charged one and half.
3)Ex:if the meter shows 17 and we pay them 20, we never get the 3Rs back but we surely get to listen to harsh comments in the local language.
why are they asking for a hike when they are anyways looting the public..
give them wat they ask for but also make the rules more stringent so that they dont get a chance to harass the public as they all have been doing all these years.

Many of these drivers are thugs. Their clout has closed down the rightful prepaid rickshaw booth/stands at Mangalore main Railway stations since a couple of years resulting in all the hapless passengers coming out of distant rains to pay whatever exhorbitant fancy rates they demand. We have no choice but to pay up thanks to their "Union". Government should take fast cognizance of this issue and put an end to this menace for the benefit of general public.

first of all there should be pre-paid booths for hiring autos at railway stations especially mangalore jn & udupi railway stations as the auto drivers are determined to loot the passengers.secondly all auto drivers in undivided south canara should be thought the lessons of politeness!!those who refuse to come should be debarred for atlesat one weeek or should be given nice police station service!!! I found the south canara auto drivers are the worst in attitude with poor manners.. Only God save ...us... poor passengers!!!

These rickshaw drivers are a confirmed greedy bunch. What they fleece from passengers even now is @ taxi rates of Mumbai. The difference in Petrol rates is marginal but their haughty attititude incomparable. May God save our hapless passengers.

When their counterparts in Kerala can afford running Autos at Minimum Charge of Rs.12 and Rs.6/Km thereafter, why these Thugs of Mangalore cannot? Kerala is a consumer state where the cost of Fuel, Spares are much higher than Karnataka and the road conditions are worser. Still when they can afford, the Mangalore Thugs are looting the public only because the Administration is a mute spectator. The increase will only help legalise the on-going daylight robbery.

Pity autorickaw owners and vehicle owners for they have heavy maintenance due to bad roads of Mangalore. Corporators are merrily giving excuses either saying no funds, no sanction, no contractors and all possible excuses and roads are not repaired. Posh area they call Shivabagh. but what a bad horrible state of road. No one will want to buy property and stay there so bad road and so bad sewage wastage drain running through all the big bungalows of doctors and businessmen. And no one says anything to repair the roads. Good autos must double their charges so that corporators and MCC wakes up and also DC takes notice to repair the bad bad roads.

there should be no increase in fair.auto drivers now only demand Rs 10 to Rs 20 and some times it will even go to Rs 50 after 7pm to go through roads which are interior...i always go to my college in auto and never ever any one driver s me near my home.he says road is not proper.instead of let they protest against bad roads...if they do so we will also follow them and join protest...or else we civilians have to undertake a protest against auto drivers & force the district administration will have to undertake our demand ....we will protest if there is a hike ...mark my words we will...

Two things about Mangalore linger on the minds of the tourists for a long time - yummy icecreams at Ideals/Pabbas and Day light robbery by rickshawwalas which increases exponentially from dusk to dawn.

I do understand the demand of the rickshaw drivers wherein they want to increase the minimum, in order to recover their costs. However, they should understand that given the current mileage given by 2 and 4 wheelers, the demand to use the rickshaw for commuting may decrease, as using ones own vehicle is more economical not to mention the ease of access at different timings.

Without meters the way the rickshaw-walas loot the passangers at present in Mangalore is much more than their demand of 40%. Their demand seems to be to legalize this loot. Apart from this, if the destination is too close to the starting point or if the chances of getting 'hire' on return trip are less due to remoteness of destination, then the passanger has to compensate for the likey 'loss'. Concerned authorites have been dumb spectators to all of this.

The price in hike is OK. But, strict action has to be taken against them, if they disagree to come to certain places
