Mangalore, Jul 12: Auto rickshaw drivers belonging to as many as seven unions on Tuesday July 12 demanded a 40 percent hike in the auto fare in a unique protest that saw them taking their autos from Hampankatta to the deputy commissioner's office without starting their engines.
DK district auto rickshaw drivers unions’ coordination committee, DK district auto rickshaw drivers’ union, Janatha auto rickshaw and vehicle drivers’ union (HMS), Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (rickshaw unit), Surathkal auto rickshaw drivers’ owners’ union, minority auto rickshaw drivers’ owners’ union and park committee took part in the protest.
The auto drivers said that the last hike in fare was when the petrol price was Rs 50 per litre. Now it has reached Rs 70 per litre. Annual insurance price which was Rs 2,000 has now risen to Rs 3,000. The price of spare parts and tyres have increased by one-and-half fold, and repair costs at garages have also increased. LPG cylinder price has also increased by 40 percent. Thus it is impossible to run the auto rickshaws at present meter rate, they reasoned.
They were also furious with the Mangalore City Corporation for repairing only 100 km of the over 500 km of road which comes under its limits. The rest of the roads are in pathetic state. Interior roads within the city have not been developed from many years, thereby making the maintenance cost a big expenditure, they said. Hence, a revision of the auto fare was inevitable, they stressed.
The unions submitted an appeal to the DC addressed to the state government listing their demands. They also demanded the state government to provide five litres of petrol or LPG each day on subsidy basis as given to fisherman.
