Udupi, Jul 13:
Whoever said the path to God was not an easy one must have paid a visit to Shree Kshetra Mandarthi.

Shree Kshetra Mandarthi is a historically famous holy place. Every day devotees in large numbers from various places like Thirthahalli, Koppa, Shringeri, Sagar, Shimoga, Hebri, Kundapur and Udupi throng the temple to do darshan of Shree Devi.

But while the number of devotees to the holy place has been increasing, there has been a decline in the number of buses plying to Shree Kshetra.

Shree Kshetra Mandarthi is not just a religious place, but is also developing in the field of education. Thousands of students are pursuing their education here. Their only mode of public transport is buses, which are few in number. Consequently, every bus that plys to and fro the place is overloaded with students and devotees.

During peak hours buses plying on routes like Shiroor, Moorukai, Goliyangady are filled to capacity and often seen with passengers hanging on to doors and window grills or sitting on the top of the bus, which can be highly dangerous.

People here complain that though there is route permit to run buses every 15 minutes in village routes, private bus owners are operating one bus on three permits. Moreover, there are also allegations that they charge more fares than fixed by the Udupi RTO.

The best solution to the problem would be the introduction of government buses on the Mandarthi route, which will benefit students, devotees and other daily commuters. Besides, they will obtain pass facility, students will get concession on bus fare and there will be special discounts for senior citizens and physically challenged people.

However, though there is a public demand to introduce government buses, nothing has been done so far, and the lobby by private bus operators is further thwarting the process.

Hanging people are habituals and practically can not sit in the bus inside even though bus is vacant. This is just like the conductor of the bus can not write properly on a table provided with chair. He can write properly only on a moving bus in standing position!!!

    People,

Hanging in the ladder is really very good excercise,,, we used to do it from shirva to Belman while going to school in 70s,,,,,,

Even though very dangerous,,, if one hangs on the ladder everyday,,, there is absolutely no need to go to Gym.....

In this 21st century, why the responsibility of running the welfare of the citizen is entrusted to few private operators? Let the private operators surrender their buses to the authority and let the Govt run them like the BEST buses in Mumbai.
It is shocking that one of the fastest growing nations of the world with growth of 9 % is having the roads and the transport system that can be compared to any Third World African nations. Our local representatives should wake up from their deep slumber.

Reminds me of our school days. We used to always travel in the footboard of the bus. Run few steps till the bus moves and jump while the bus comes to a stop. The conductors always had something to say to us..."mitt bale maare...saipaara neldh"

There are passengers hanging off other passengers, who in turn hang off the railings and the overloaded bus leans dangerously, defying laws of gravity but obeying laws of surface tension. As drivers get paid for overload (so many Rupees per kg of passenger), no questions are ever asked. there is no law & order for public transportation in India.

This happens because only on special days like Tuesday & Friday more devotees visit the temple. If you see other days the bus will be empty. No one is dare to run a bus only on these special days.

Yes. Recently I commented about similar story of MaxiCabs.

First thing to be done is we have to awake sleeping RTO's. Second thing is Banning of standing in Bus. This will create problems... agreed... agreed... But at least to bring awareness to bus operators that loading the people like sheep flock is not their birth right - standing should be banned.

You know what... ? Only people who travel in those buses say "It is difficult to travel in that bus..." But bus operators are happy about such a rush in bus. They always expect that bus SHOULD be full with people hanging.... They don't bother about the troubles or cost of the lives...

Bringing awareness to people takes some more decades. Probably we can see these type of pictures in India and may be in some African countries...
