Posco's Karnataka Steel Plant Plans in Doldrums

Bangalore, Jul 14 (IANS): South Korean giant Posco's plan to set up a six million tonnes per annum steel plant in Karnataka is in doldrums with the state government dropping plans to acquire land, in the face of opposition from farmers and religious leaders.

"Even if the farmers agree to give land, we will not acquire it in Gadag district," Chief minister B.S. Yeddyurappa told reporters Thursday.

"If Posco is interested in setting up the plant elsewhere in the state and if farmers willingly give their land, we will give in to the company," he said.

Yeddyurappa had announced late Wednesday that land will not be acquired in north Karnataka's Gadag, about 400 km from here.

After Gadag was chosen as the preferred site, the firm had deposited Rs. 60 crore with the Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board (KIADB) to start the land acquisition process.

The KIADB had identified over 3,000 acres in and around Halligudi in Gadag and had sent notices to land owners, most of them farmers, for acquisition.

However, with a number of farmers opposing takeover of their land, three religious leaders, including Sri Siddhalinga Swami of Thontada Math (religious institution), joined their protests and warned Yeddyurappa of state-wide agitation if the move was not given up.

Yeddyurappa bowed to their wishes.

The Congress and Janata Dal-Secular had also joined the protest by Gadag farmers.

Besides Gadag district, Posco had identified Bagalkot and Bijapur districts of north Karnataka, as potential sites for its plant in which it proposed to invest around Rs.30,000 crore.

Farmers in Bagalkot and Bijapur are also likely not to give up their land as religious leaders like Sri Siddhalinga Swami are urging farmers to oppose the acquisition.

The religious leaders are demanding that the government take over only barren land unfit for agriculture to set up industries.

The chief minister Tuesday dropped plans to acquire over 2,000 acres of land for a special economic zone in the coastal town of Mangalore after Sri Vishwesha Tirtha Swami of Pejawar Math threatened indefinite fast. Pejawar Math is in Udupi, 350 km away from Bangalore.

Steel Plant if the farmers voluntarily give land: Chief Minister

From Our Special Correspondent
Daijiworld Media Network - Bangalore

Bangalore, Jul 14: Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa has reiterated that the State Government would not forcibly acquire lands from farmers for South Korean steel giant, Posco’s proposed steel plant in Gadag district.

The Posco Steel Plant will be established only if the farmers voluntarily give their Dry Lands. Otherwise, the project will be shifted to other place. Under any circumstances, farmers’ land will not be acquired forcibly, he declared.

''Having taken oath in the name of the farmers, I will not go against the interest of the farmers," he said, adding: ''The Government has decided to establish industries only in districts where farmers willingly come forward to give their lands with a good intention of encouraging industries, job creation and development. There is no question of acquiring the lands against the wishes of the farmers.

Yeddyurappa said industries will be established only in places where the farmers voluntarily come forward to give their land. ''Therefore, there is no need for strikes, protests and dharnas in connection with the land acquisition. Our Government is not interested in establishing industries by neglecting the interests of the farmers," he said.

The Chief Minister has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Gadag to stop the land acquisition process immediately.

For industrial growth, the Govt should acquire waste land in less developed region and if there are cultivable lands in-between than they should offer them 20% of their land value in cash and that too at market rate and 80% similar sized less developed land around that region. Otherwise, the farmers are tend to sell their land that is their only livelihood and blow the easily earned land-sale money in booze and other vices. That is why the women folks of these farmers protest against selling their cultivable land that are their only livelihood.

Why? always farmers are targeted? how much a military is required for nation that much farmers are also required. farmers and military both are strong pillars for a strong nation. Indeed development should not be stopped, if we look at nations like Japan they are very well developed nation. but they have never touched thier agricultural land. Still we can see it. Government should study properly before any decision without proper study inviting MNC to invest in country and when public oppose it they cancel the plan so more than development government is bringing trouble for common man, development and MNC relations. Already we are suffering from inflation..in such circumstance if government acquiring farmers land what will be the outcome……?????

Let Yeddy or Reddys give their illegally acquired land in their respective places rather than let an opportunity of providing employment to thousands go abegging to some other state.
