Mangalore, Jul 15: The Talent Research Foundation organized a day-long workshop on ‘Initiative in Research and Innovation in Science (IRIS) at the Talent Conference Hall, Vishwas Crown, Kankanady here on Friday July 15.
In his inaugural address Shivaprakash, project officer, Sarvashikshana Abhiyana, said that interest among students in getting into science stream in PUC is slowly declining. Most of the students take up science with the intension of pursuing medical or engineering courses in future but very few are interested in research.
Some prestigious schools and colleges are now only working towards sharpening the memory power of their students by making them mug up the subject matters, he lamented.
Hence there is need for teachers to change their approach in their teaching methods to make the subject interesting. Scientists emerge in this nation only when students are motivated to inculcate the habit of being inquisitive and innovative, he stressed.
He also noted that in recent years there has been lack of science teachers in many schools and colleges. He called upon the teachers to question themselves that whether the real construction of knowledge is happening in the present education system or not. He added that in order to encourage science stream, grass root level works are to be carried out to re-establish the support given for science.
Puttur Kallega Mudarris Abdul Azeez Darimi said that educational institutions should aim at stimulating the hidden power among children. Taking note of achievement of scientists across the world, he said that innovative and unremitting approach among students is the need of an hour.
