Mangaluru, Jun 25: A huge heap of wastes that was lying beside Ullal Beach under the city municipality limits has been removed. The area was cleaned and levelled and a warning board was put up to alert visitors and locals not to litter the place by throwing any garbage in the area. This work was done on Saturday at the behest of local MLA and Speaker U T Khader.
The work of cleaning and fencing the area was taken up on Sunday evening with the cooperation of members of all political parties.
Acting municipal commissioner Vani V Alva said, “The first job that I did after assuming office was clearing the garbage that was dumped near the Ullal Beach. I discussed the matter with DC, project director, local MLA and Speaker U T Khader. Earlier, the wet and dry wastes collected here was sent to the MCC. However, MCC has not been collecting dry wastes for the past three to four months. Within two days of taking the decision of cleaning the area, some people, without any knowledge held a protest at the garbage site. Now the area has been cleaned up. Health officers, personnel and civic workers have worked day and night for four days to clear the garbage. In future, anyone found disposing waste here will be dealt with strictly.”
“It was decided to clean the Ullal Beach area and fence it at the city municipality as per the suggestion of MLA and Speaker U T Khader. Members of all parties supported the decision. But some people held a snap strike and blew the issue out of proportion. As there is no separate place for waste collection under Ullal city municipality limits the waste used to be dumped in the area and it was collected by MCC so far. But as the waste collection from MCC stopped, the garbage got piled up. But the work of putting the waste handling back on track is being done,” said Ayub Manchila, vice president of Ullal Municipallity.
Ibrahim Khaleel, Mukkacheri ward member, said, “As the decision to clear the wastes was taken as per the instructions of our MLA, some people held protests here. Now wastes are removed as well as fencing has been done. In addition, arrangement is complete to collect wastes from each house.”
President of municipality Chithrakala Shashikant, president of standing committee Veena Shanthi D’Souza, members Ibrahim Ashraf, Basil D’Souza, Azeez Basheer, Geetha Bai, health officers Shajith, Ravikrishna, supervisor Pradeep, revenue inspector Chandrahas, civic workers Kenchappa, civic personnel, drivers and locals were present.
