Mangaluru, Jun 28: A devastated family of farmers has lost Rs 15 lac during the last five years due to unscientific work done by GAIL company as 400 areca nut saplings planted this year and the sprinkler have been destroyed at Balippaguri, Killuru, Inoli.
The cultivation of Killuru resident I B Hussain has been destroyed. Mud has been caving in due to unscientific road digging and the chicken farm, goat farm, house and private land are on the verge of destruction.
The GAIL had bought 22 cents of land from I B Hussain in 2018 for Rs 72,000 for laying of gas pipeline. Their subsequent work was close to his cultivation on an area of one acre land. They closed the old drainage and continued the work laying the pipes. Rainwater that was flowing in the drain started flowing along with heaps of mud in the cultivation causing huge loss to Hussain as a variety of saplings planted by him were destroyed.
The GAIL contractors assured Hussain, who opposed the work, that the work will be continued without causing any loss to the cultivation. But the engineer who assured Hussain was not at work the next year.
Five engineers were in charge of the work during the last five years. Though the current engineer has started constructing the break wall this year after a timely warning, the work is of inferior quality. The sprinkler and the saplings have come under the mud like every year.
I B Hussain said that he has burnt his fingers due to the loss during the last five years. “Communicating with the engineers is difficult as they speak in Tamil and Telugu. Six houses on the border of the farm are facing the problems of mudslides. The company should take action soon,” he said.
“Hussain was the member of Pavoor gram panchayat and developed his one acre land for cultivation. The houses of local people are on the verge of collapse due to unscientific work taken up by Gail company five years ago. A legal campaign will be taken up if GAIL does not take up remedial measures,” said Vivek Shetty, former member of Pavoor gram panchayat.
