Udupi: Rise in highway accidents - Two deaths every third day

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (MS)

Udupi, Jun 26: In the period between January 1 and June 15, 2023, a total of 120 fatalities have occurred due to accidents in the district. This means that, on average, two individuals are losing their lives every third day in the district. The national and state highways passing through the district have identified 19 accident-prone zones, also known as highway black spots.

Addressing the media, SP Akshay Haake stated, "The police, NHAI (National Highway Authority of India), and RTO (Regional Transport Office) are jointly preparing a comprehensive report. As of now, we have identified 19 accident spots in the district, and all necessary measures are being taken to prevent accidents at these locations."

"The report takes into account engineering and technical issues, as well as driver negligence. Five months ago, inspections were conducted at Katapadi and Kota junctions. At Kota junction, barricades were placed 50 meters behind, and the highway was painted with white markings. Dividers were also installed on the road leading to Shirva from Katapady to ensure smooth traffic flow. As a result, no accidents have been reported in these areas over the past five months," added Haake.

Priority is being given to controlling accidents during school hours. Discussions are being held with the administrative committees of schools located near the highways. Starting from June 26, the police department will train the school's security guards to act as traffic police.

In 2021, a total of 1,010 accidents occurred, resulting in the loss of 189 lives. In 2022, there were 1,232 accidents with 234 fatalities. In the current year, from January 1 to June 15, 120 people have lost their lives in 566 accidents.

Same anger like murder needed for road accidents -- --negligent driving always -- it is wrong to call it accident -- always it is dangerous and reckless driving -- no rules followed- (Accident means a sort of freak situation -- which cannot be foreseen -- )-- So a separate action plan needed -- GOVT and Civil society movement ---- IMAGINE - in one short journey of a few hours -- minutes -- whole life changes for many --gone for ever --OR - put into hardships -- orphaned - bread winners gone etc -- maimed for life -- medical costs -- loss of income -- family life -- depression post accidents -- long list of misery --

Nhai is making records in laying roads without absolutely any consideration to safety! Just see the number of accidents on the recently inaugurated Bangalore Mysore Highway::570 accidents, 55 deaths, 100s critically injured on Bangalore-Mysore Expressway in 5 months" An expert committee has been formed recently which has found many scientific flaws in its construction!! These new highways are very dangerous and harbingers of death!!

I drove on the Bengaluru-Mysuru highway recently. I have travelled all over the world and I can say that the highway is one of the best in the world even though autos and two wheelers go in the 3rd lane. All accidents are caused by bad driviers, those who are overspeeding and cars in poor condition. Speed limit in most stretches on this highway is 100kmph. If you adhere to it, your car is in good condition especially tyres and you are a decent drivers it is very safe.

These number of accidents are not a coincidence; a detailed project report has been just made, which says improper entry/exit points and overspeeding are the two main causes for the accidents!! BTW, what's the use of building a highway and not controlling the movement of vehicles?

Busy junctions like Katapady and Padubidri should have proper traffic signals with camera to catch the violators. Driving in the district is highly indiscipline and needs to controlled. Every side of the Road including State and National Highways are used for driving both the directions. This has to stop. Proper line marking should be there on the roads and the speed breakers are to changed to new design. At present these are not speed breakers but car breakers.

The news about the rise in highway accidents and the alarming rate of two deaths every third day in Udupi is deeply concerning. Such incidents not only lead to tragic loss of life but also have a significant impact on the affected families and the community as a whole. It highlights the urgent need for enhanced road safety measures, strict enforcement of traffic rules, and increased awareness campaigns to promote responsible driving. Efforts should be directed towards improving infrastructure, implementing effective traffic management systems, and educating drivers on safe practices. Only through collective efforts and a comprehensive approach can we strive to reduce the number of accidents and ensure safer roads for everyone.

Vehicles can be killer machines -- many a times lorry cleaners without training graduate to become drivers -- likewise in other vehicles -- zero training -- knowledge of road signs -- hazards - over speeding -- etc how licenses are issued needs to be strictly checked -- more than murders (homicide)-- people are dying on the roads -- in vehicle accidents -- IN india -- we have the dubious record of being the highest in the world --0- road fatalities -- serious injuries -- --with less than 10 % vehicle population --

Sadly, the Highway Authority of India, is a very poor authority in the knowledge of Roads and Freeways planning and engineering, and the contractors to whom the jobs are awarded are all unprofessional companies, just getting the job by way of bribing that is the norm in India! A few year job takes fifteen years, thanks to all the local MLAs and MP who are employed to take care of the State. They get their moolah and are happy so long as the road projects are delayed and poorly completed. There are no safety features on NH66 for the general public nor cars, and no overpass or underpass for cars and pedestrians foreseen or built to cross over to the other side, and instead, the poor Road Transport or Traffic Dept of the Udupi and Mangalore Districts, have placed, barricades at every town on NH66, that is so hazardous, without any warning signs or of blinking hazard lights on most barricades. Many a times, these Ferrari private bus express bus drivers, have topped their buses due to these hazardous barricades. All said, one cannot make a Dogs tail straight!

Don't give Drivers License to anybody without they are fully aware of ALL traffic rules and can drive safely....if anybody drinks and drives put them behind bars for at least 90 days....and see these death rates will come to near ZERO.... But nobody will want to become RTO if there is no bribes...Tak...Takk...

Langoolacharya, Belman / Washington, D.C. - I fully agree with your comments and it makes sense. But some people without knowledge of traffic rules will be unable to digest it.
