Mangalore, Jul 24:
The tardiness of the city police came to the fore when they were faced with the task of shifting a body found by the roadside in Kankanady here on Sunday July 24.

The deceased, later identified as Hillary of Bajal and aged around 50 years, is suspected to have died out of drunkenness. The Kadri police reached the spot immediately after they were informed by passersby, but it took them as much as one-and-a-half hours to shift the body to hospital.

Hillary collapsed on the road at around 2 pm and soon the police arrived on being informed by the locals. However, they were clueless about who to contact and did not know what arrangements to be made to shift the body. One policeman dialled 108, but was met with the response that 108 ambulance was meant only to shift patients in serious condition to hospital and not for the dead.

Nonetheless, the ambulance arrived after about one-and-a-half hours but then new problems arose. The police realised that they did not have a paper and carbon sheet to write down details. They went in search of a stationery shop to buy the materials but as it was Sunday shutters were down everywhere, but later a person managed to get the things and handed them over.

The shoddy work by the police evoked criticism from the locals who were witness to the entire episode. They said that if the police take so long to shift a body within city limits what would be the case if a similar incident happened in remote areas.

Police on the other hand said that as it was Sunday, staff were less which caused delay. Later the ASI of Kadri station arrived at the spot and made immediate arrangements. The body was finally shifted to Wenlock hospital.

Meanwhile, brother of the deceased also came to the spot and urged the police to speed up the process. Hillary's wife is a nurse in a private hospital and he also has a daughter.

Excellent comment from you. For the first time i am hearing this from a muslim. usuall very one say christians are drunkers. Christians do drink, but there are many more drunkers from other religion. When drinking we should know our limit, then it is enjoyable... just like driving a car, you can drive 160 ph in Dubai/Abu Dhabi highway, but you will endup in big accident. Internet for example, there are good and bad things, we should know control ourself. Don't let them to control you.

    Hallo Rakesh,
Probably you are not matured enough when it comes to struggle for life and death. Problem is with the police and people in general who instead of helping a needy person, save his or her life,
give them an opportunity to live, it is a total disrespect to human being. Police could do a lot of things to save a life or even after death. It is a shame to our society.

Many surprising as well as deep
and critical lessons to be learnt
    from this event. Hillary started
    this terrible and destructive
habit years back and it seems like
he never got help from any source, which is terribly sad. Let his soul rest in peace.

But the rest of the events are very
    surprising and laughable.

    They were clueless about moving
the body. It is quite a routine
all over India to take the body
of a dead person found on the roadside, to a local government
    hospital. The police might have
    missed that lesson or totally
    forgotten it.

The ambulance took 1.5 hours. Why
it took such a very long time?
Whether the person was dead or alive, the ambulance arrival was
too late from the same city. May
be, the ambulance had no wheels
while the call was placed by the
    police, or the drivers might
have been under the minute influence of alcohol.

Now the most surprsing event is
the lack of paper and carbon copy
to write the report. If the police
of Mangalore is in the habit of buying office supplies like buying a cigarette, then the police
    department of Mangalore
    deserves a special award from
    New Delhi for their
    great performance. Great
job: wait for a PADMASREE AWARD
    next year.

its not the question of christian only. There are so many people in Muslim, Hindus also who drink. So please pull religion into this. Here the matter is about the police and their responsibilities. Thanks

There is nothing fault with the police, they have done their best. But the problem is with the deceased. He should not have been drunk in public and sleep in the road side. Christians community should open Alchol de addiction centre and create awareness among the people
    about evils of drinking .

Sad death to take place. May Hilary`s soul rest in peace. It seems this is a case of extreme addiction to alcoholism, to which some people like Hilary, get succumbed. Mainly because of the boredom, depression and a few personal, social and economic problems they face, and to escape from such situation and difficulties, they take up to consumption of alcohol, where they find temporary shelter and comfort. Unfortunately, in the process, they get used to regular consumption of alcohol, and once you get addicted, it is very difficult to come out, and therefore, these people need help from outside sources.

It is at this juncture the various Welfare Agencies and Social Organisations like St. Vincent Paul Society, Alcoholics Anonymous, Rotary and Lions Clus etc should come in and render their services. These organisations should actively look for such cases in the Society, and help them to ovecome their adversities and problems.

Very well said... of course it is a shame and really embarrassing that the police do not know their own basic procedures and are left like a laughing stock in front of everybody.we are leaders in I.T in the world but we still lack basic life saving facilities from government owned forces.

In India there is no value for human life,I think even the police have no Independent power to act for in case of emergency.
