Mangalore, Jul 24:
The foundation stone for the first of the 160 houses to be built by the Mangalore diocese for the poor was laid at Batrakodi in Kelarai parish here on Sunday July 24.

The houses are being built as part of the several projects undertaken by the diocese during the post centenary silver jubilee year.

The foundation stone for the first house was blessed by bishop of Mangalore Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza. The beneficiary family is of Diana D'Souza whose husband died two months ago due to a heart attack. She has two children Joshwa (7) and Joyston (3). The diocese in collaboration with St Anne Church, Kelrai will help Diana to build the house.

Msgr Denis Moras, vicar general, Fr John Vas, parish priest, Fr Onil D’Souza, director, CODP, Sushil Noronha, secretary of jubilee committee and William D’Souza, partner, Souza Group of Companies, the first sponsor for the housing project were present on the occasion.

Under this project 160 houses will be built for the poor. The bishop has appealed to generous donors to contribute towards the project.

Truely commendable act. Keep it up. I wish all the parishes follow suit by building houses for the poor instead of wasting funds elsewhere. This is the real need of the hour. A decent shelter and then a work opportunity will definately benefit the poor and needy and stop the flight to cities.

good initiative. Instead of building churches with crores of rupees houses for the poor must be built. the diocese must sell some of its prime land and help the poor. many of our churches have vacnt land that is not used for any purpose. good job by catholics

I fully agree with Mr. Elias/Mumbai, help our own community first. We all have seen the result of our overwhelming support to other communities. So my humble request to all my catholics, have control on your genorosity, help our own brothers & sisters who are in need first. Let all unite together and help each other instead of expecting from all corrupted sources of govenment.

I was indeed very happy to see His Lordship Bishop Aloysius Paul D'Souza laying the foundation stone to build 160 houses for the poor. Please keep up the good works not only in one Parish but in all the Parishes so that all poor people will at least have a shelter over their heads. Regarding donation towards such project, I personally feel that if the Parish collects every first Sunday of the month a sum of Rs.10/- from families who are employed in Mangalore, they will be able to build many more houses for the poor. My strong appeal to all Catholic brothers and sisters to come forward and give a helping hand for such projects all over Mangalore and this thought should also be put into practice by the Parishes in Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Karwar and almost all the states in India. Let us all be happy to see all our Catholic brothers and sisters find a suitable shelter for themselves and their family members. God Bless all the people concerned who have taken all the pains of putting this project in bringing relief to all the poor families. Once again a big GOD BLESS TO YOU ALL.

The Diocese of Mangalore shows determination to help and to buid 160 houeses for the poor.
They need shelter and protection to have a future and to lead a dignified life.
This is an important step in the right direction a second step should follow to give them work that they can earn a livelihood.
Building 160 houses shows the commitment of the Catholic Church to stand side by side with the poor.

Great initiative on the part of Mangalore Diocese to come forward on a scheme such as this. "Bhoodan Movement" of Mangalore will gain great momentum and support from the public as we move along with "more giving" to the poor and the needy.

Our Diocese of Mangalore has been blessed in so many ways, and this blessing will be shared slowly but steadily so long as we make the justice towards those that deserve the most.

THIS IS NOTHING BUT A FANTASTIC INITIATIVE BY THE BISHOP AND CLERGY OF MANGALORE DIOCESE. THIS DESERVES A WORLDWIDE COVERAGE SO THAT PEOPLE FROM ALL WALKS OF LIFE CAN CONTRIBUTE TO THIS NOBLE TASK. I AM PRETTY SURE THAT THIS IS ONLY THE BEGINNING AND IF IT CONTINUTES IT WILL BE A NON STOPPER. RICH WILL CERTAINLY COME FORWARD TO GIVE AT LEAST THEIR TAX MONEY TO SUCH GREAT INITIATIVES. CONGRATS TO ARCHBISHOP ALOYSUS. DODDANNA DAMASKATTE ABUDHABI

    Something truly commendable and
totally pleasing to our GOD. In this world, JESUS expects us to
wipe the tears of as many people
as we can through feeding them-
clothing them-educating them-giving them medical care and
    shielding them from rain and
Sun shine. I pray that the true
believers of GOD will be challenged to undertake such
projects to help as many people
they can help in any way they can
afford to help. The Churches have
to engage more urgently to solve
these social needs the poor people
    are faced with today.

    Dear friends,

It is indeed an evangelical initiative from the Clergy - Laity combine. I am sure, such programs enhancing lives of poor and underprivileged will send a strong message to people within the community as well as people, which might trigger a friendly competition between communities in genuinely serving the poor. A shift from the volatile/display/idol worship to practical human faced faith is a welcome development.
